I know someone who formats there hard drive at leased 1 time a week sometimes more. Is this a good thing to do or not? I dont think it is. What do you think?

It's a total waste of time to start with and sounds like someone is a little too paranoid! You simply run a system and add protective programs. If you do get whammed with a bug you either see it removed or then wipe the drive clean to start over fresh.

yeah tell him to get cdp. then he does not need to, i mean its not bad, but pain in the back

It doesn't hurt anything. It's pointless maybe, but that's about it. All he needs to do is use system restore.

Meh. To each his own.

It doesn't make much sense at all. I guess that's one way of making it seem like a new computer but it just seems like a total waste of time.

That's precisely what it is. Unless you are working with various configurations where you are beta testing or experimenting with various OSs with differing drive configurations simply wiping a good working OS on the same drive every so many days for no reason sounds a bit like someone is paranoid. If you are worried about startups run the basic OS only.

there's a program called "deep freeze" that will bring the computer back to default everytime it's rebooted. all new files and installed programs will be lost. good idea if you don't install a lot of new programs every now and then and when you do then just set a new baseline. this is perhaps the best option for the paranoid user

I have the program deep freeze, But he or I don't know how to set it up.

wait so why does he format that often? scared of viruses or protected information? that is such a hassle because everything has to be installed again...

You would first have to know who this person is first. Is this strictly from someone trying to have the perfect system? Or is it someone who regularly performs beta testing on new softwares where different system configuration and software environments as well as OSs are run in order to take notes on any problems that need to be worked out.

For someone using their every day pc as a test subject reinstalling OSs and programs would be the usual task and no major issue. For the average user being seen wiping a drive weekly that would appear... But for someone working with softwares and development there's a reason.

Not if you are testing for MS, Apple, SUN, even 3rd party boot tools where custom installations of differing OS combinations have to be cnanged on a regular basis. The testers work day by day with some new beta added to their regular software environment to take notes on things like errors or improvements to make.

But every single week seeing a full reformat is a little out there even for them.

A common myth is that a hard drive will die if it is reformatted a lot. Not so. Also, a common myth is that formatting is deleting, not so--I'm sure most of you know this but just in case. If the person who is formatting the drive way too much is using Windows where he will have to have a product key (and has to call or get it online too much) will raise suspicion of Microsoft and will investigate him.

How many times can you install on the same hdd without having to call? A couple?

You would think after calling microsoft a couple times and coming up with excuses so many time that they would eventually stop giving away keys. Well thats were microsoft screws up and keeps handing out keys! It is to easy to get keys now days!
