check that out, 70watts for core duo, 74watts for athlon X2 3800+
one thing i thought was weird was core duo did do its fair share of outperforming the X2 3800+... but the X2 3800+ also did its fair share of outperforming the core duo.
if you're getting a laptop, i guess you might consider an AMD desktop proc as well as an intel desktop proc then :)
not to mention the core duo they used was at a higher clock speed, 2.16ghz vs. 2.0ghz.
they also compared how much a high(er) end video card would effect power usage.

hmm i thought that the amd would use a lot more watts than the core duo interesting, it is a great processor the new core duo no mistake

yea, but the margins are smaller than everyone thought.
it does use a tiny bit less than the X2's, and performs slightly higher depending on the app...
but if one had windows vista 64-bit the X2's would have an advantage :)

u can also handkle more threads with a 3800+x2 the core duos dont have hypre threadin all amd x2 sereis uses hyper stransport as well as the duo core tech but the x2 sereis is beter than ani intel for gaming u name it the 3800x2 will beat it

Those are so different it isn't funny. I mean I'm not even going to break it down :P

Toms Hardware isn't good anymore. All they do is throw a bunch of graphs at you with way to many configurations (usually almost all ones that you don't need) and very few that actually make sense. I remember one article they had like 30 different teset configurations (if anyhting I'm underexaggerating here).

I think a few of us will see that comment in another thread shortly, what do you think cromewell

to be honest i've never liked them, they went through a period of intel sponsor ship a few year ago. Now they just flesh out there reviews with rubbish.

They were ok when they first started and needed credibility but now they can go 10 pages without putting a single word on the page.

quite possibly....

the benchmarks are true though...
i duno, i always kinda looked for benchmarks wherever i could and tomshardware had what i needed lol

Yes they give you a lot of benchmarks but the problem is they don't usually give you good bases for accurate comparison. Even Anandtech is getting worse. About the only people who give you too many details now are X-bit Labs

Well in the power consumption for example they compare setups with discrete graphic cards to integrated. They also tend to compare non comparable systems

well, they bench all the procs with integrated and all of them with a graphics card... as expected the one with the graphics card used more energy...

They should show either all with integrated or all without integrated. Comparing discrete to integrated on power consumption is dumb.

lol no it won't! a pentium 4 at 3.8ghz would school an x2 3800+ in just about any game i'd bet...
even a p4 at 3.2ghz might outperform in some games...
of course, overclocked (even just to 2.4ghz) an x2 3800+ would school any pentium 4 lol

Yes it's true the Core Duo's dont have hyper threading, but neither do the X2's. Hyper Transport is exclusive to AMD, but its not the same thing as hyper threading. And the Core Duo can outperform the X2 3800+ stock at multi-tasking and/or gaming.

note: the core duo has more cache... thats part of the reason why.
plus the core duo would be in a laptop, most laptops don't have very good video cards or and don't support dual channel memory... ddr400 in dual channel would outperform most ddr2 667 memory... not to mention desktops can be o/ced much easier.
hypertransport is the AMD's version of the front side bus... and it's not even fully utilized! lol
