Fps question

Guys just want to ask, whats the acceptable frame per second (fps) for games to run smoothly?
Usually i use setting that allow games to run at least 35 fps above which sacrifice a lot of "beauty" graphic.

It depends on the game, because some games such as Halo look great at a constant 30FPS. However personally 35FPS for games such as CSS or BF2 is not enough, especially because that would mean that it drops down way too low at times. I try and to have an average of 50-60FPS (although I do get higher with my computer).

well its whatever you find suits you, that is, when you look at at and its smooth, thats the one you need. I go for 40fps+ but then I don't have a great graphics card really.

Wow i dont imagine that high.
First i think 35 fps above is good enough because i've tried to set to 25 fps and the game run like like a turtle, every command seems to have a lag time especially with racing or fps game.
Is 60 fps that great? I mean i tried to compare between 35 fps to 60 fps and there no big differences (game test fear)
And since i only have a 8600gt...

yeh, you don't really notice anything above 40/50fps. so the difference between 50 and 250 you wouldn't even see really. 35 should be fine I think personally

edit: yay! that was my gold post! :)

i disagree, i can see a difference between 60 and 100

well, you do notice a bit of a difference between 30 fps and say 70 or so. its the difference running normal, and well, the "whoa, this runs smooth" kind of feeling.

Yeah, you can just tell when something isn't running at a great FPS, I tend to aim at around 50FPS, Which I do manage to get, so it's Ok.

You're crazy man ;) Monitors cannot render FPS above their respective refresh rates, so unless you have a monitor with a 100 hertz RT than there's no way. Given the fact that most LCD are set to a 60 hertz RT, That's all you'd ever see. It's a common misconception, fueled by the vertical sync option. Vertical sync merely forces you're card to render at the RT so the frames are synced, not the case otherwise when the graphics card is producing many more frames than is needed and the subsequent "layover" can get mish-mashed producing a tear.

As for me, 25 FPS and up is smooth. After 35 or so I can't tell the difference.

So hermeslyre if i can manage to adjust each game setting to get around 30-35 fps to get acceptable gaming experience? I mean good performance vs good graphic.

Well as the other have said, FPS tolerance is in the eye of the beholder. But generally, yes, if you can adjust the settings to your liking, and get 25-35 FPS, Then you're good. This is on average mind, If you were to get 35 as a max FPS in a resource-low area, the high resource, or graphically taxed area, or situation, can drop from that quite a bit, possibly resulting in stuttered or "slide-show" gameplay.

Some people argue that very high Frames (40-60) will benefit most in high-paced action games like first person shooters. I myself can't say they're wrong, but still don't see the necessity in anything over 40, except in the case I described above, In which the frames will vary according to situation.

As I said before, if a game was at a constant 40fps or so then it would be fine, but if thats the average then it's going to dip into the <20fps range during some insane explosion scenes and what not.
