Free Anti Virus Software

Microsoft Genuine Advantage is a pirates worst nightmare.
You are obviously an advocate.

The "hack" you linked to remove the tool is not from Microsoft.
Also, the second link, the one from Microsoft, is over a year old and is referring to a version distributed during the pilot program.
Here it is at Majorgeeks too (you know a malware removal forum) http://majorgeeks.com/RemoveWGA_d5170.html
But seriously Google:RemoveWGA, you will see that its quite legal, and better to remove, personally I don't like spyware or not required startups.
This all must be new to you ;)

Updates are essential for the security of your operating system. Why do it manually?.
Yes do all updates, but because many haven't (as shown in many users logs), if they install this program they will likely go over their monthly usage, and they should have high speed Internet. Obviously dial-up members, or members with low monthly allocation of Megs, should not download this MSE package. Thank god I informed them ;)

Completely paranoid. What information do you think they are getting?]
I don't want any of my information, not related to having an Antivirus installed, being given out.
Why should I, when free Avira (and absolutely all other Antiviruses) don't require this invasion of privacy

The decision is entirely yours of course
I decided to say NO to MSE, and my system runs perfectly with free Avira (note: users can Google to remove the splash screens in Avira too)

so let me get this straight. you're suggestion that simple microsoft updates will cause people to exceed there monthly download limits? that's totally false, some ISP's don't even have limits. mine is something like 250GB which i don't even come CLOSE to, ever!

you seem to be strongly against this security package, although your reasoning is nothing short of paranoia, as bodaggit said.

Hilarious. That link is for a file from 07-29-2006, XP only.
It also sounds risky, because the service is required for some updates.

I especially love this part:
Editors Note: Avira detects a trojan in RemoveWGA. The file is clean.

Rofl! Like anyone here is in jeopardy of going over their "monthly usage"
by doing Windows Updates.

You're telling people to not keep Windows updated because of internet data restrictions?

Once you're updated, it takes next to nothing to keep it updated.

A whole service pack isn't even 1GB. If anyone had a traffic limit that
small, they wouldn't be able to browse these forums.

Like I said before, this is plain paranoia. You think Microsoft is rooting around your computer looking for what? Bank Account numbers? Personal records?

For what reason? I don't think Bill Gates needs to steal from me...

Well said.
