FS X gaming machine

If this thread is in the wrong forum please accept my apologies and move it.

I am planning to build a gaming machine for my son and me to use MS Flight Simulator X on. (It will also be used for other non violent sim and racing games that don't demand as much as FSX.) The current take on FSX is that it doesn't utilize dual core processors. Would it be a mistake to build a system using a single core processor that has a higher core speed than a dual core for the same cost? Or am I better served to build for the future with a dual/quad core processor and sacrifice core speed?

FSX appears to be a resource hog and needs serious horsepower to run even at mid to low detail levels.

I'm not sure which direction I should take.

Thanks for your advice,

Kevin

Im pretty sure it'll run fine with low/med settings on a 7600GS.

but what's the budget for the pc, and what do you already have?
and yes, i think this post will be move, not sure tough :o

I think you'd be fine with building a single core machine. Games are not taking advantage of the second core at the moment. By the time they are you'll most likely be ready to upgrade.

You were right ;).

Looking to spend $1,000 or less including monitor and operating system. This will be a totally new build. I don't believe in wholesale upgrading; I did in the past and now am left with a pile of worthless parts! I may have some wiggle room with the monitor as I have an older one that I can use for a while.

My current system is a Dell Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz, 2 gig ram, 7600GT 256 MB AGP video card, DVD, etc. It runs FS9 just great but I'm not sure it will do that great with FSX. I'll know more Tuesday when I install FSX!

Thanks,

Kevin

really everything maxed out? i get around 34fps in FS2004 if i max everything out.

I havent checked framerates, but I'm thinking it's around 30, since theres not much lag while playing. Unless something is really messed up, because the graphics don't even look that good, nothing like the DX9/10 shots of FS X.

thatmust be some good stuff your smoking. i have 2 gigs of ddr2 a 3800 and an x1900xtx and maxed out i get lag spikes every minute or so and about 15-20fps. fsx is very demanding. there is no possible way a 7600 could max it out.

well.. grafically perhaps.. (maybe not full AA? ) i also maxed out the air traffic and weather etc,... i think that pretty much kill's the fps :)

Perhaps there were some advanced settings I overlooked. I'll run it right now with fraps and i'll take a screen shot.

I guess I did overlook it, since im used to seeing an "advance" tab, not "customize". So I set everything to it's absolute highest settings, and the framerates werent so hot, lol.

Heres a shot (still not breath taking graphics though):

This is what it looked like when I just had it set to ultra high:

I have no clue how to use the new FS, lol. There are way too many controls, thats why I prefer the original :P

I just fired up FS X and hit free flight, but I believe its someplace in St Maarten.

just press <G> and the gear will retrackt.. XD and damn... i wrote retracked instead of extended gear.. >_< ah well... :P
