GeForce 7900GTX or X1900XT?

What you gotta do is wait for it to come out, then not buy the one w/ better preformance buy the one w/ better performance to price output. Both cards are gonna be able to run any game out there so the extra money might not be worth it if the performance aint extremely notable.

Thats what i did with the GT and now i wished i would have got the GTX.

yeah... that's the problem... i want to get the best card out at the time... i want to have the best thing on the market for the time being... if i knew these would be the answers i would have got i would have just bought a GeForce 6600... i know that'll run most games i'd play...

the reason i wanted the best now is i plan on having my comp for a while and i figured if i'm gonna spend $400+ on a videocard, i might as well get one that'll last for quite a while...

If you want best card, its going to be 7900gtx but im willing to bet its gonna be a good 200-300 dollars more expensive.

ill bet the 7900's will have more shaders and same amount of pipes. ATI went for 48 shaders... WOW and the 7800gtx only has 8 :) still though, the clock's matter more at this point... games don't need all the shaders and pipelines right now... what they need is more SPEED :)... say a 2.8ghz memory clock WOW that would be cool :)
oh and my opinion is that SLI is better and simpler... more manufacturers make compatible motherboards, you simply needs two identical cards... whereas with crossfire you need a crossfire card and a regular card, and you need to find a crossfire mobo which will probably cost a few bucks more than an SLI mobo.

ok... another question... say i'd buy a sli capable board and gfx card... then i wait like 6-8 months and try to find the same card as i have...

what if they don't make it anymore?
or what if they do and if they update the software/drivers/hardware coding, are the two cards still 100% compatible and guaranteed to work together?

Even by the time it is out the new ATI card may be out (Hopefully). Though i would thin kthe 7900 wont be far away as Nvidia have stuck with the 7800 range for a long time!

I think you're confusing pixel shaders processors with vertex shaders - IIRC, the X1900 series has 48 pixel shader processors & 8 vertex shaders, while the 7800GTX has 24 pixel shader processors & 8 vertex shaders.

Now unless you have very specific uses in mind or you intend to play 3DMark a lot ... you really wont notice the difference. I personally would go with the X1900XT because I dont foresee the 7900 lineup as seriously dominating the X1900XT in any meaningful way (i.e., when you're busting 100fps+ in games, an extra 20 wont bloody matter)

As for the SLI issue, I addressed that in the Video Card 101, should give you some insight as to my response for SLI

did you buy your mobo yet?
if its nvidia chipset, might as well get 7900, but if you don't have mobo yet...
just buy the 1900,, when the price drops, (after 7900 comes out)
and get the ati chipset mobo like, a8r mvp

yeah

the 7900 comes out on the 9th... so you have waited this long so IF you are one deciding wether to wait or not an extra day wont kill you :-p its already being preordered in the UK
