Get a Mac or fix my PC?

Hi. I've had my PC laptop (Asus) for about 2 years now, I got it from my parents in high school to help in my studies. It's served me well for quite long, but recently it's started to run slower and slower, and just today it froze up and crashed several times as I was using simple programs like Movie Maker or Paint (one at a time, I closed all other applications but didn't help). It's got a Dual-Core 2.00 Ghz processor and 3 gB RAM and ran great just after the purchase, but after 2 years you can't really tell.

If often locks up when I surf the web and sometimes I just grow tired of waiting and come back some time later. I hate it when technology doesn't work the way it should.

Anyway, to my dilemma: I sat down and made a (really) short list of what I actually do on my laptop. I use the Internet to check my mail, get news, visit Facebook and Twitter and watch video clips. Other than that, I mostly just listen to music and watch DVDs (I have no TV of my own), or write Word documents. I did some research and found that most people say that Macs are just as good at these things as a PC, if not better. One of my best friends is an "Apple geek" (has iPhone, iPad, Macbook Pro, Apple TV etc) and he says that the Macbook is much better and easier to use than a PC so long as you're not into heavy gaming. (And I've got another PC as well as an Xbox for that, my current laptop can't handle any games.)

So I'm struggling: should I stick with my PC for a while longer and ask someone at the local computer store to tune it up a bit, or should I simply be free of the crashed and malwares and get a Macbook? I'm starting university and I need a reliable machine to write documents and access mail and the Internet on. I've got some money saved so I would definitely be able to buy a Macbook if I wanted to. I'm just wondering if it's worth the money at the moment. On the other hand, I'm convinced it'd be a good purchase. The friend I mentioned persuaded me to buy an iPhone after I finally got rid of my Sony Ericsson, which malfunctioned from the moment it came out of the box. My iPhone is the best thing I've ever bought, and I love how it would be able to sync with a Mac.

Anyway, opinions/ideas? I know that I get better performance for less money if I simply buy a new PC but I really want to get away from crashes and viruses and I'm pretty sure I'll buy a Mac sooner or later anyway. I'm just wondering if it's a smart thing to do at the moment. I'm just really tired of a malfunctioning PC.

Thanks for your time.

Did your Asus laptop come with a recovery disk ? If you where to remove all important things on it, you make it brand new again just by using the recovery disk and wipe it and start fresh. As for upgrading to a mac, I would get a nice Toshiba with Windows 7 on it, I personally don't like mac or any mac software...

You don't need to take it in. Lets see whats going on with it.

Lets run some malware scans and do some general cleanup and see what happens.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com but DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Vista and Windows 7 users must right click on the hijackthis icon and click on run as. If the run as option doesn't appear then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on the icon to get it to appear.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Get a new windows 7 dvd or see if you have the factory reset os disk that came with your laptop redo the operating system wipe everything clean then your computer will run like new and give no problems it'll be fast and smooth no freezing or problems.

If not then yea get yourself a mac laptop they are great and you will enjoy it more than your windows laptop / pc if you use if for what you like to do. You can also sell the laptop you have now if you redo the os for new price and it'll all work out for you well if you do it the right way.

You don't need to take it in. Lets see whats going on with it.

Thanks a lot for the help, I need to stick with this PC for a while more anyway.

I can't seem to save the HiJack log. While scanning, it says that my system denied access to the Hosts files. When trying to save the log, it says the log is already there and wonders if I'd like to replace it. When I say Yes, it says the file doesn't exist and asks if I would like to create a new one. Either way, even though I've saved it to a certain directory, no text file is there.

Here is the Malwarebytes log though. It's in Swedish, so I don't know how much use it is.

Malwarebytes locked up and stopped responding for a while about halway through, then resumed and finished the scan. No other applications running.

I would probably never buy a Mac because they're much more expensive. If you can get something that performs better for less money, why would you not do it? If you download a good antivirus program, keep it up to date, and use safe browsing practices, there is no reason why you shouldn't remain virus/malware free (or at least be able to catch them quickly). But restoring your original laptop is definitely a good idea since it will "refresh" the computer. But there will come a point where your computer is obsolete, and the hardware just won't be able to keep up with the demands of newer software. From the sounds of things, though, your current laptop specs are fine for now.

You must do the following.

Sorry, completely missed that. Here's the logfile:

PS: Strange fact: When I right-clicked and clicked "Run as administrator", that particular panel froze on the screen and now overlaps everything I do, though the rest of the computer runs fine. Guess I'll have to restart to get rid of it.

I need you to post a special log from hijackthis. Open hijackthis, click on open misc tools section, click on open uninstall manager, click on save list and save it. Then copy and paste the contents of that log back here.

I also need you to download and run Ccleaner if you don't already have it installed.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Click up top right where it says download latest version. Once the program has been installed, open it and click on run cleaner. This will delete all the old temporary system and internet files and should restore some of the speed back to your system.

Thanks for all the help. This is the log. Getting Ccleaner now.

Is the system still slow? I would get rid of avg pc tuneup, its useless. You have a bunch of programs starting on bootup thats not needed. Lets see if we can get it cleaned up.

Rerun hijackthis and place checks next to the following entries. They can always be started manually by clicking on the program itself.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateLBPShortCut] "C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\LabelPrint\MUITransfer\MUIStartMen u.exe" "C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\LabelPrint" UpdateWithCreateOnce "Software\CyberLink\LabelPrint\2.5"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateP2GoShortCut] "C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\Power2Go\MUITransfer\MUIStartMenu. exe" "C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\Power2Go" UpdateWithCreateOnce "SOFTWARE\CyberLink\Power2Go\6.0"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SweetIM] C:\Program Files (x86)\SweetIM\Messenger\SweetIM.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [APSDaemon] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\APSDaemon.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogMeIn Hamachi Ui] "C:\Program Files (x86)\LogMeIn Hamachi\hamachi-2-ui.exe" --auto-start
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DAEMON Tools Pro Agent] "C:\Program Files (x86)\DAEMON Tools Pro\DTAgent.exe" -autorun

Then click on fix checked.

This will stop the programs from running at bootup. There is still more but I don't know what you want to use at startup.

If you don't use the following you can check these too.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Boingo Wi-Fi] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Boingo\Boingo Wi-Fi\Boingo.lnk"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HDAudDeck] C:\Program Files (x86)\VIA\VIAudioi\VDeck\VDeck.exe -r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogMeIn Hamachi Ui] "C:\Program Files (x86)\LogMeIn Hamachi\hamachi-2-ui.exe" --auto-start
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MobileDocuments] C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Internet Services\ubd.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [iCloudServices] C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Internet Services\iCloudServices.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ApplePhotoStreams] C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Internet Services\ApplePhotoStreams.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [KPeerNexonEU] C:\Nexon\NEXON_EU_Downloader\nxEULauncher.exe
O4 - Startup: Dropbox.lnk = Kristoffer\AppData\Roaming\Dropbox\bin\Dropbox.exe
O4 - Startup: EvernoteClipper.lnk = C:\Program Files (x86)\Evernote\Evernote\EvernoteClipper.exe
O4 - Global Startup: BankID säkerhetsprogram.lnk = C:\Program Files (x86)\Personal\bin\Personal.exe
O4 - Global Startup: SRS Premium Sound.lnk = ?

All these take up system memory and cpu which will slow the system down. Can you give me a better idea of how its slow? Does it take forever to boot up or is it still slow after windows as finished booted?

"Fixed" all the ones you suggested. I'm not sure if it boots faster or not; takes about 35 seconds after I press the power button for it to reach the login screen, and about 30-40 seconds more after I log in to reach a usable desktop.

It is not the booting that bugs me, so much as the lag and freezes when the computer is already running. I'm experiencing a significant stuttering just while typing this, with no other major applications running and this is my only open Firefox tab.

This is not really a gaming laptop, I wouldn't expect it to run Crysis 2 on maxed out graphics with decent FPS. But when it lags in MS Paint or Movie Maker while just listening to a song on iTunes... that's just too much.

When I switch between tabs in Firefox, it often greys out and the cursor turns into the little blue circle. Could be for a minute or two, but most of the time, I have to bring up the Task Manager and terminate everything.
Also, I sometimes have to click buttons, like favourite websites or "close window" at least 2 times for it to take effect. It reacts the first time already, but nothing happens.

Also, a few days ago, everything locked down and I got this bluescreen. I restarted it several times and it didn't change. Wouldn't let me boot properly. I finally started in Safe mode ("without network or command prompt") and did a system recovery to a safe point 3 days earlier. I don't believe I had made any major changes to the system since then. To be honest, I know very little of these things.

EDIT: I thought a driver was missing, but I went to something that should be called "device manager" in English (My Computer>Properties), but no driver seems to be missing, other than under Network cards, something called "Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter". It has a little yellow triangle. I have tried to click "update drivers", but it says the latest drivers are installed. However, it also says "This doesn't work properly, since the necessary drivers cannot be found (Code 31)", or something to that effect.

ndis.sys refers to your networking controller. And since you have a networking device not installed, its most likely the issue. Right click on that device in device manager and click on uninstall. Then reboot the pc and see if windows can reinstall the driver.

Uninstalled it, rebooted, then got a message "Windows has been restored after an unexpected shutdown" [or equivalent in English]. Opened the device manager, said icon was back, still with the yellow warning symbol. Still experiencing stuttering and lag in Windows.

I would try reinstalling windows fresh and see if that takes care of it. If not, then it seems you have a hardware issue.

I see. As previously stated, I know relatively little of computers. A hardware issue means I should let a professional look at it?

(I might try reinstalling Windows, but I've got a number of documents and photos to back up first. Still, it's worth a shot if you think it's the only option.)

If you reinstall windows and it still happens then yeah, it would have to be diagnosed.

In your first post when you say it crashed, are you actually getting bluescreens(bsod's)? If so, please do the following.

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Well, no, that was a very ignorant and liberal use of the word by me. I simply mean it locks up/freezes/won't respond etc. I don't get blue screens very often.

Spent quite a while looking for the recovery disks, will reinstall tomorrow. Thanks for helping!

Disks didn't work but pressed F9 during boot and was able to reformat and reinstall everything.

Hope it will work better now. Thanks for all your help!
