I've got a budget of $1000 USD and this is what I came up with. I'm mainly trying to figure out if everything is compatible and if there are any bottleneck points.

Hardware

Motherboard: ASUS M3A78-EM
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
CPU Fan: ZALMAN 110mm Heatsink and Fan
Graphics Card: Radeon 4830
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda SATA 500GB
Power Supply: Silverstone 650W
Chassis: Raidmax Aztec Steel Mid Tower
CD/DVD Burner: Lite-On
CD/DVD Player: Asus
RAM: G.Skill 4GB (2x 2GB)

Software

OS: Windows Vista 64-Bit Premium

Peripherals

Keyboard: Microsoft Sidewinder
Mouse: Microsoft Sidewinder
Speakers: Logitech 2.1
Monitor: Sceptre 22" 2ms Widescreen

Other

Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver 5

Certain items are combo'd together lowering the prices a bit more than what you see.

Pictures of the items in cart:

Well, if you managed to make it through the wall of links I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!

Oh, almost forgot to mention that I'm planning on OC'ing the processor quite a bit, thinking of going for 3.6.

Things Changed

Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 640GB

Possible Changes

Motherboard: Biostar TForce
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz
CPU Fan: Zalman 92mm Heatsink and Fan

Damn you you read too fast I edited that as soon as I posted it :) what are you sitting there constantly hitting refresh!

Haha, I just happened to refresh at the right time I guess. :P

and nice find on the HDD and RAM, I'll definitely switch to it. Who wouldn't want 140GB for 10 bucks?...

Edit: I'm not sure Dual-Core processors support 1066. Anyone wanna confirm this?

Gr, see now you did it to me, read the edited post, and you say I sit here and refresh..lol.

You did not change anything??

get 8 gigs of ram or change your OS to 32 bit! Sheesh!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144240

p.s. I changed my mind when I saw you had 64 bit OS.

nevermind didn't see you edited your comment i thought you meant you edited the main post.

EDIT

SEE WHAT I MEAN AMD IS TOO CONFUSING!!! besides there stuff is made with child labor and crappy parts and they over clock the hell out of there stuff to try to make it look better...

spend the extra bux and get a real processor!!! not some child labor piece of metal.

I'll probably upgrade to 8GB later on, but due to my budget I could only fit in 4GB :( and I think 32-bit only recognizes like 3-3.5GB of RAM or something along those lines. Keep throwing me more ideas, I hadn't really thought about getting more RAM, but the more I consider it the better it sounds :D

8 Gigs of Ram is useless unless you are doing some heavy stuff.

a 4830 video card? With a $1000 budget?

Basically a 9800 GT, but a bit better or so the benchmarks say.

4830 just came out yesterday for those that are confusing it with the higher end 4850 and 4870

What's his name is right you'll never really use 8 gigs of ram except for me :D vista 32 bit detects all 4 gigs for me besides i'm shure you'll run into some annoyances with 64 bit just get 32 bit and get some high quality ram also get a real processor! read my other edited post with an extra fan you could probably overclock the e8500 to 4.5ghz.

Lemme guess, an Intel duo-core amirite?

What is it about Intel that everyone likes and then dislikes about AMD?

read the edited post YOU REFRESH FIEND!!!
also look at my other edited post...

intel is high quality and keeps there stuff clocked at a reasonable speed and is made of high quality materials. AMD uses child labor slabs together there processors in a couple seconds using scrap material using 1989 technology then they overclock it out of the box to compete with intel when really that 3.1ghz amd should be at 2.5 ghz. Also intel lasts longer.

I liek teh refresh but0n.

I'll go check out some Intel processors real quick, and I've got a pretty good CPU fan on there, although I'll have to change that to fit with the Intel socket type.

Bah, I need to find another Mobo then too, uhg..gimme like 20 min, I'll find something..

When it comes to core 2 duo this is YOUR ONLY! choice right now...

you can overclock it to 4 ghz at least if you wanted 4.3 ghz with a nice fan and with some liquid nitrogen probably about 6.5 ghz.

lol go go liquid nitrogen. I'm thinking I'll just go with the 2.66GHz ver and OC it to around 3.4.

Uhg..dam me and refresh, lemme go look at that post real quick..

Edit: I'll probably change GPUs too, since Nvidia practically whored themselves out to Intel, they'll probably be a bit more compatible with their Mobo and processor than Radeon.

You'll notice the higher clock then you will the mutiple cores ANY DAY, although some users swear that in some distant future programs will utilize the multiple cores aloot better. But that's tommorow or the day after after after, speaking in the now I would go with a higher clocked dual core and overclock the hell out of it. Because most of your stuff 99% is not gonna use the quad core and even if it does it's not going to be a huge difference while the higher clock will be, when your compiling things(who the hell compiles things?)

That was another reason why I liked AMD, not to get you too confused by me saying that. I liked the mobo setup, it allowed me to run a dual-core and then have the choice of upgrading to a quad-core in the future, if needed.

I'm gonna do a bit of research and see if I can't find some better deals with Intel.
