Poor high school student, cheap parents, etc etc.
So here's a picture to tell you what i'm running on:

CrappyCPU.jpg

Paycheck in a few weeks and I'm still deciding on what processor is good, i do casual gaming, nothing too graphics intensive like crysis or anything, but something to make up for my crappy 256kb/s internet connection so it's not THAT bad. Also stuff for homework (OOo Suite atm.), audio & video editing and production, and general multimedia (listening to music), and general stuff like web browsing, streaming, etc etc.
I had in mind a AMD Athlon x2 5200+, with stock HSF, and a decent mobo.
I'm going to assume that i'll have approx. a $250 budget for processor, ram, mobo, and vid card, however i'll ask about hte processor.
Oh yeah while i'm typing this i'm freezing up like a *******.
Thanks, regards poor 15 year old.

Need more info on your system. Like what type of MOBO. You may just have to buy a new cpu and more ram with a clean install of windows. Try to find a used P4 for your system I'm guessing a 478 socket. I may have something in my garage for you but a need more info.

Specs:
well bought the computer years ago (start of grade 7 and i'm going into grade 11 at the end of summer soo...)
It's an emachines so that means it's not too featured if i recall it's an Intel OEM..
Here's my computer model: eMachines D845GVSR, i added another 256mb stick of ram so running 512+256.
Oh and see how cpu is at 100%?
That's me running nothing but windows live messenger, and firefox(with avast antivirus in background), FF running two tabs - facebook & imeem.
Fan is going loud so i know the processor is getting hot as it usually is.
Hard drives running 1 80gb (software & OS) and 1 40gb (multimedia files- music vids, etc)
Unsure of RPM's on both drives.
Oh i have a 2.4ghz socket 478 p4 , but i put that on my brothers computer which i'm sure is faster then mine but i said i'm upgrading anyways.
Oh, and i live in Canada if that helps any.

By the specs it looks like P4 soket 478 will drop in just fine but you are maxed on your RAM slots, it only has two total. If you want to save as much money as possible then install P4 soket 478, pull 256 out and drop anoter 512MB of RAM and get decent PCI video card. This setup should not cost you as much. If Sho95 won't be able to locate his CPU, let me know and I should have one.

What OS are you currently running?

XP pro sp2 however i can't get updates cause oddly i reformated and my cd key wouldn't work.
I need to get XP home sp2 because i have a workng key for it.
However i multitask alot so i would prefer to get a new mobo+cpu + decent pci-video card.
Like i said earlier i have around $200 to spend( in 2 weeks time anyways )

You got a virus or a program acting up. That's way it keeps shutting down 100% constant can cause cpu to over heat making your cpu slow down then shut down PC. Fastest thing to solve issue will be clean install. You don't need to install any more ram for what you need it for. Run the programs I told you to download and run them in safe mode.

Quick note:
If you just re-stall you'll see a quicker pc which will buy you more time to save more cash.

i reformated a few weeks ago, my computer still can't handle heavier apps.

Edit: full hard drive wipe & reinstall.

Have you looked at the Task Manager? What process is using up most or all of the CPU? Not sure what apps sho95 told you to run, but I would check for viruses and spyware just in case. Also check memory usage and that will give an idea whether you need more RAM or not.

The issue now is the $200. Most likely your going to need a new PSU and ram. But I show you what I found :
mobo

cpu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103214
gpu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130313

this is about $210 with tax and shipping but I would also would get this:
ram

But save more money cause I think your going to need more stuff like HDD cd dvd drive PSU. I would look on ebay for a used system that would be around your price or look in this forum for sale area. I would just add this if your mobo would support it and I think It will:

Which will be a good improvement over your current cpu.

IIRC newegg doesn't ship to Canada?
So i was going to go with NCIX(ease of payment) which is a canadian source so it'll be more $$$.

What i was considering:
CPU
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=27680&vpn=ADO5200DOBOX&manufacture=AMD

Undecided on mobo however, and GPU, but there was a cheap 7200GS for $34 there too.

Also plan to reuse HDD, dvd, and PSU(230W)
So i would need a mobo with IDE connections as well.

-Also that P4 on ebay? I have exact same one running on my brothers computer.
however i thought it would be time i updated my own computer.

or you could do a good old-fashioned msconfig just to see how much he has running

click start
click run
type in MSCONFIG and hit enter
click the startup tab MAKE SURE YOU CLICK STARTUP AND NOT SERVICES
go to the bottom of the menu and click disable all
click apply
click okay
Reboot

See what that does

Hm i'll order a 400 w PSU as well only not much more, remember i can get more than $200 if need be, i just gotta do good at work and let the tips roll in. So long as total cost is below $300 i'm happy.

Found a local store.
So not ot get off topic but i asked for processor suggestions, and so far i got socket 478 P4, however i'd like something with more "oomph" and multitasking abilities ( Running Itunes, Firefox, MSN messenger,, open office are the usual ones running at same time)

 Get out and earn some money. Get it your self. Earn it. At least part of it.

:( cheap parents (They feed you, provide you housing, and every thing else.)

Waiting for paycheck... help me buy my computer and tip me :D.
I told my parents to stop supply me with money, and reason i limit my budget is casue i have to buy some new pretty clothes .
Anyways I'm not saying i'm upgrading just my processor, i'd like to upgrade the mobo as well, right now i'm stuck between AMD x2 5200+ or Intel Pentium E2200.

Any reason why as to choose the e2200?
I plan to start gaming after hte upgrade.. gaming on the current rig is well.... a turn off, my processor chokes on low requirement games like maplestory, and even starcraft.
