Hi all,

I heard some time back that Google was releasing or has realeased a new operating system called Google Os or something:confused::D

But i cant find it so is it even released and is it free?

anyone tried it?

Thanks

I had space set aside on the second ide here for dual booting it along with Vista there and both versions of XP on the other drives. But the installer goofed the Vista boot loader up for some reason forcing use of the repair startup problem tool. So far I haven't run across any guide lines for this yet.

It does look better then many linux distros being made by SUN Microsystems and is worth a good look. Where do you think you get Java from? SUN holds high standards on the things they come out with. But we'll still have wait to see in a couple of years just how any Google ideas work there. :P

I read the article, but i wouldn't find the need to have different interfaces for differen tasks. (some people still strugle with just the one). I think google would probably just stick to the web, but i guess an OS is more than possible from google.

Well, it'll be nice to have a new operating system to compete with MS Windows.

That depends on what it offers as well as how well it is supported! Another crap OS helps no one.

I thought solaris ran on PPC based hardware...

so I looked it up and it seems that x86 based hardware is now supported

oh well

I had originally assumed it would be geared strictly towards their own prebuilt systems until always seeing Java for MS. Where do you get runtime? From SUN of course. The one thing lacking here is to get it running after the files are copied to the drive. The way it smashed into the Vista boot loader didn't help here any. But I still wanted to see how it compares to Linux since it has a similar platform.

Well i just downloaded that React Os and tried to get it running through Vmware workstation but it doesnt boot up.
im just stuck at a black screen:cool:

il have to try something to get it to work :)

React OS also has a live version as well and does nothing more then providing a basic desktop. It kind of seriously lacks as a true OS there. When installed on the last build you couldn't do much there with it. The newer releases may offer more now but Solaris looks far better.

They are going to have to come out with something fabulous or else there. Otherwise they'll soon slide behind MS even. :P

Here's an OS that's free and is opposed to run Windows programs:http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html

I tried running it in Virtual Machine to check it out, but it didn't go so well. Probably because it's not the final product yet still in beta form.

yah I've tried that, but it seemed highly unstable. As I remember it supported Abiword, and some games but not Firefox or other modern browsers. It crashed a lot--it even has the good ol' Blue screen of death.

Try it on QEMU. I know it works on QEMU. As I recall the website offers a version that will "run on top of Windows", and they bundle it with QEMU.

Google wants to start selling it's own systems with an OS there. That would be trying to compare "Apples" to oranges when looking at how Apple/Mac is a separate OS iriginally intended for their systems. SUN certainly came out with their own namely Solaris. But like mentioned earlier they will need something fabulous to break the MS, Apple/Mac, and even Linux preferred atmosphere.
