Got something weird here.........

Hi ya guys. Im new here so be a little patient with me. Im computer savvy, but not real super technical savvy. i have built my own computer from scratch and it works fine, but now there is something weird going on..... i have windows xp (which i am starting to save right now to buy windows 7) and i went to the add/remove programs in the control panel and it wont open. i also noticed that it wont go back to a previous restore point. i think i have a virus, but ive done virus scan, malware scan, adware scan and nothing is coming up. below is a list of things that ive done, and if there is something anyone can help me with, it would be GREATLY appreciated! thanks in advance!

ESET Antivirus
Malwarebytes
Spybot
CC Cleaner

I also have tried removing and reinstalling .net framework....

i also downloaded superantispyware from download.com, and it didnt load or run. kinda weird!

I sure hope someone has heard of this before, cause i dont want to strip down and reinstall windows.

Sounds like you have an infection. Please perform the following procedure.

First thing you need to do is download and run Rkill.scr and run it. This should kill any active infections that are stopping superantispyware/malwarebytes from running. After running rkill, DO NOT reboot the computer as you'll let the infection reactivate itself.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

i tried what you said, and rkill wont even load up. i downloaded it to the desktop and tried it that way but nothing happened.

anything else?

well, i did a full scan, and it didnt save the log file for some reason. it did say that there were no malicious items on my computer. i dont have the time to do it again. i did a quick scan and here is the log file for that. i will check back tomorrow for your help. once again, thank you very much.

You need to update malwarebytes as the definitions are way outdated. Open malwarebytes, click on the update tab, click on check for updates. Keep doing that until it says you have the latest version then scan your system again.

i think i found the problem. its a program called wuauclt.exe. it seems to be a windows update worm that i found on bleepingcomputer.com. if thats the case, i dont know how to truly get rid of a worm without reinstalling windows. i know about combofix, i just have never used it. let me know if that is the case and i will do what i need to. thanks

Ok then. Do this and lets see what it finds.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.


In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

absolutely nothing. i double click on it and nothing happens. the same thing with all the other programs that i tried to download. i double click and nothing happens. i did download autoruns to see if i could see any unusual files in there, but i didnt see anything out of the ordinary, plus i dont know enough about some of those files and didnt want to delete anything important.

Download rkill.scr and run it but do not reboot the system. Then try running combofix again.

If it still won't run, try running it in safe mode.

Nope, not a screen saver. It's a program that should stop any active infections from running your malware/antivirus programs. It may seem you have other issues though. Cause if malwarebytes runs then so should combofix. Do you have any security software running? Please disable your firewall and antivirus before running.

ok, i disabled my antivirus, tried to run combofix and rkill and neither worked. i also tried combofix while in safe mode and nothing once again.
