HELP! I dropped my brand new laptop and broke the audio port!

On the very first day I received my new PB W1801, I dropped it..!

Unfortunately for me, my external speakers were plugged into the audio output port at the front of the laptop just beneath the touchpad.

The port cracked and over a couple of weeks the physical condition has deteriorated to the point that there's no audio at all.

My question is... what do you tell the tech support at PB? Because it was an accident, and not a fault in the machine itself.. does this mean it is not covered by the warranty?

My friend tells me that it doesn't matter if it was an accident or a faulty machine and that they will fix both, as long as its within the warranty?

If you would be so kind, could anyone tell me of experiences they have had with laptop repair. Courier/length laptop is away for/data safety?

Do I have to back up my files if it is taken away for repair?

I would really appreciate the advice.

Thank you!

Emily

Well, if you just stuck with the standard warranty then they won't fix it...I think(every company's warranty is different). If you bought the extended/extra protection/whatever warranty then they should fix it for you.

Yes, sometimes they'll go ahead and fix the internal mechanism, but any damage to the chassis, they won't fix. Sometimes, they won't fix it at all unless you pay for it. But of course, they can't give you a quote or diagnosis if they can't see it. So yeah, backup your stuff and send it back. Other options are to get a PC card type sound output or usb headphone port.

Oh thats excellent, I didn't know you could get alternative USB audio options!

That might be a short term solution while I need my laptop for uni work.

Thanks u guys!

I just had a sudden impulse to be mean and say "If you break your laptop the day you get it, you don't deserve to own one"

But seriously, I feel sorry for you :(

*nods head and agrees with starwarsman....though i really shudnt be saying anything since i have books behind my laptop to hold the screen part up and its no longer portable but i hope to get a new comp soon*

Then when they get the laptop to fix it, open it up, they'll know that it was dropped, and charge you to repair it. Fraud rarely works.

Yeah i have to agree. Been there, tried it, still had to pay and there is no point in saying "If you break your laptop the day you get it, you don't deserve to own one" and making it public that you agree is just as bad! Im very sure she didnt mean it! I mean who dropes laptops for a laugh and shes only asking for help. Lets be resonable. Please.

I only dropped it because I went from having a very portable old 14 inch screen laptop to this 17 inch widescreen thing that is cumbersome to move around.... and oddly shaped.

I'm not a clutz so keep your opinions to yourself!

I was not serious when I said that. It was meant to be a joke, but I guess it came off as something bad - not my intent.

Sorry if you guys took it the wrong way.

Have you tried wiggling the audio cable??

wiggle it hard enough that it moves the internal device (Show some mercy don't beat up on it.)

And see if you here and thing from your speakers.

If you here a sound you may have knocked something loose and wont be that expensive to fix, if anything.

If you hear something in your laptop when you shook it, then now i ask you: do you know how to use a solder?
If yes, good. I am here to tell you what i do to mine. I will use clipper to clip some bits off an unwanted plastic and take these bits and melt it using a soldering iron for plastics. I solder that meltedpiece of unwanted plastic (same colour as your laptop ports) and try to glue them onto the broken or cracked part of it. After this, use something metal to flatten the mould and then leave it to dry. But before you start all these, please open up your laptop and take out the motherboard. You cannot solder the port in the plastic case. Later, you will also melt the plastic casing and then trouble starts. After the thingy dried, then you can fix everything back into position and start to use your ports.
If you don't know how to do all these things, then i suggest you better bring that thingy of yours to the repair shop and let them do it for you.
