HELP NEEDED:Older Desktop No Ethernet Socket!

Hi guys,

I have just gotten my broadband connection and modem and they work just fine on my laptop, which is brand new.

But my desktop, which is older (2001), has no socket in the back for the ethernet cat5 cable which connects it to the broadband modem -- it only has two line sockets for the phone cable.

I want to ask you whether I can replace the internal desktop modem with a newer one which has an ethernet socket or if there is some kind of adapter available (PCI card?) which could make it possible to use the broadband on the desktop, without me having to buy a new computer :)
I am not very familiar with the technology, so I would ask you kindly to explain the terms you are using, such as the PCI card I mentioned above, but whose use I only guess.

no, the modem is attatched to the motherboard and it is impossible to remove it. however........

or if there is some kind of adapter available (PCI card?)

yes, you can do this if you have an available slot. if you have never put a PCI card in there, chances are you do have one available. here is a pic of what you need:

Thanks a bunch for the help!
However, I have another thing to ask: if I put the PCI card in, is that all? Will it work afterwards?

P.S. I'd gladly share a coupla beers with ya, since I am in Prague and enjoying the best beer in the world!:)

there is a cd that comes with the card with the drivers on it. just pop in the cd follow the instuctions reboot and you are ready to go. in some cases you will not need the driver because windows will automatically recognize the card.

as for the beer, if i ever take a vaction to prague, ill look you up. or if you ever come to the states.:) btw what kind of beer are you sippin?

I just popped out to the local computer store and bought a PCI card, but it doesn't have a CD. I will try to install it right away and if I have trouble doing it, i'll let you know.

P.S. I'm sippin' Budweiser, the Czech original, which is the best in the world! You're welcome for a couple of beers when you're in town!
