So I have been shopping around the last few days..this is what I've come up with.

Motherboard- MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum-"k8n neo4 Platinum"
939 pin--Athlon 64 FX/Athlon 64/Sempron
$77.00-Newegg.com
Processor- AMD 3200+Athlon 64 Processor 939 venice core
$110ish-Ebay.com
RAM-Crucial 512MB PC3200 DDR 400
$51-Pricewatch.com
Video Card- GeForce 6600 GT PCI Express 500 MHz 500 MHz 16.00 GB/s
$84.00-ZipZoomFly.com
CD/DVD/Burner-dvd/cd-rw combo drive 48x 32x 48x 16x
$30.00-Pricewatch.com
Case-chiefmax 808 mid tower atx case 550w power supply
$30-Pricewatch.com
Sound Card-A good one already in motherboard
Hard Drive- You can hold out on..See if your old one will work.

Total: $382 Dollars

Now my questions would be
1. Is this all compatiable together? How do I know for sure if it is or not?
2. Do you think my old hard drive would work in my new compter? What's your take on that?
3. Should any parts be better?
4. Do I need a seperate cooling unit. I hear the one it has is sufficient.

Thanks for any help I can get.

Do you think my old hard drive would work in my new compter?
You will have no problem using your old HDD, You will have to reinstall the OS thought.

Do I need a seperate cooling unit.
You will get a HSF (heat sink fan) with the CPU so i wouldn`t worry about that.
It would not do any harm to throw in a couple of 80mm fans to get the air flow.

When you say the 80mm fan...Your talking about the one in the tower right? Cause the tower comes with atleast 1...it actually might be a 120mm..but is just an 80mm fan in the case and the heat sink sufficient?

Do you think everything is compatiable together..anyway to fing out before I buy it?
What do you think...I think I'm getting very good stuff for that price but I'm not smart at this at all. Any recommendations to step up performance at all?

I am planning on buying the parts by Monday..Please please please..Can anyone else give me some more advice/instruction?

Everything looks compatible. Youre getting a good system for that price, very cheap. As for having any better components, what will you use the pc for?

That PSU that comes with the computer case will probably not have enough juice to hold your system very well. I recommend a new PSU, preferably one found in Praetor's PSU101 thread.

What's your main use for the computer?

Well Ill be using it for mostly just internet use and playing World of Warcraft and maybe Everquest. Ill also have some other things like MSN messenger and AIM on it.

I was pretty sure the things I was getting are good for the prices and the age. However the Motherboard is a refurbished one. Everything else is new.

Another question I had is the RAM...It's designed for PC3200. Can I upgrade to like 4000 or so or will that not help just hurt it?

Thanks.

Getting PC4000 RAM will not do a whole lot unless you are planning on overclocking your system. Your motherboard is designed to run at PC3200, so you will not be able to run the RAM at PC4000.

Alright..So the way it sounds is stick with everything I have...Except add another 512 MB of RAM. That should run everything very well correct?

I've also just found out that in my crappy computer now I only have a 14 GB hard drive. lol

So at Staples on Monday there selling a 200 GB hard drive for 39.99. From what I hear that's a real good deal? So Ill add that too.

PSU..That's the Power Supply unit right? Well..instead of paying for a seperate PSU..what if I just bought a case with a better PSU?

Thanks for all the help so far!!!!

Hehe that is a good deal. Suspiciously good.

well, for one, what are the specs of the hdd(chances are this 'sale' is over by now)? and buying a case with a psu is like buying a dell. if you want a good one, youll have to spend lots of money. whereas if you buy one seperate and be more creative, youll save money and have more control. just go for a cheap case and good psu. everybody thinks the case is so important, when theyre all basically made to hold things. you could have all of your parts lying on a table if you wanted, the case just keeps things tidy and organized.

also, keep in mind that hdds fail. like everything else that suffers from wear and tear, the older it is, the less reliable it becomes. if you need something temporary, pretty much any hdd will work.

Not necesarily true, some motherboards (mine for instance) can run asynch mem clocks :) Not checked for sure but id be surprised if there wasnt a BIOS for the K8Neo4Plat to do the same

Um dude, you know that Staples can announce the price, and it actually say after rebates? Maybe it's like $79.99 and you send the little thing and they send you money gratis!

And is it Generic?

After rebates or not that stil a nice price. :)

That I do agree. If I could only have the money, I'd buy four...one for each.

But, take this advice: Go to the store and have a look at it. If it's Maxtor, WD or ny branded stuff go for it

I alright bought it. The day before yesterday.

Here are the specs...
Ultra 200GB 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive
200GB
Ultra ATA/133
7200 RPM

Now it's 133..but it's better then 100 which seems to be quite common...althought it's not quite sata..it should get the trick done..especially for the price.

Yes, it was actually like $109.34 at checkout. But you get a $40 and a $30 dollar mail-in rebate that takes about 4 weeks to process..and as long as I'm not in need for money then I can wait. ;)

If you'd like to look at it yourself...and maybe get 1. Here is the site.
http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/s...10051&langId=-1&productId=88043&cmArea=SEARCH

Now about it...What's the difference between internal and external..I want internal for a normal one that obviously is internal and goes in the case right? lol.

Will you look at it...Someone said suspiciously fishy....I wonder what might be wrong with it....
