Help with sister's computer, xp won't start

so the chkdsk r ran through but still no booting up of xp

do i proceed with fixboot? and will this lose wipe my drive?

You can try a fixboot, it will rebuild the MBR. I don't think it will fix your problem though. You could also try reinstalling XP without formatting the drive. All your documents and what not will stay on the drive but you will have to reinstall programs because the registry entries will be gone
 
Ok well here is an update.

she decided she didn't want to do fixboot so she ran a repair from the xp cd again. this is the repair that is selected after pressing enter on the first screen.

now when she starts the computer she get this:::

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose 'Last Know Good Confuguraltion' to revert to the most recent setings that worked.
If a previous startup attemp was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose 'Start Windows Normally'.
1.Safe Mode
2.Safe Mode wth Networking
3.Safe Mode with Command Prompt

4.Last Know Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

5.Start Windows Normally"



Any other suggestions??

well no there is always a way to recover data it just may cost you. You can pull the drive out and see if its readable in another system. You can use data recovery software and recover data to an external device.

I mean you need to have back ups of your data because computers crash. The methods listed here are pretty much last ditch effort before wiping out the HD and reinstalling fresh.
 
wait. i have a program. i forget what it is called (found i on pc mag) but it will boot a windows type of thing where she can put all her data on a flash drive and then restore. i will look for it. and if it is safe i guess i could send it to you (yes mods it is free. not illegal. had to make it my self.) if you cant make it. i will be back with the name
 
found it. it is called bartpe. but looking on how i made it. it may not be legal for me to give you my coppy. it is legal to make it but i had to use a copy of windows and make it. but if the mods think it is ok and you cant make it i will try to see if the page is online.
