Help with upgrading CPU

Hello I'm new to these forums and I need some help upgrading my PC as I am not as knowledgeable as most of you here so bare with me. I want to upgrade my Pentium 4 3.0GHz but I'm totally lost as far as what my 775 socket mainboard can handle. I tried installing a Intel Core 2 Quad 9650 and my PC didn't boot up at all. Do I have to do a BIOS flash for the Core 2 Quad to work? Or could it simply be that my mainboard can't handle C2Q?

Specs:
Motherboard: ECS 915G-M, Intel 915G Chipset
CPU: Pentium 4 3.0E GHz w/1MB cache
Hard Drive: 200GB SATA
Memory: 4GB DDR PC3200

If the Core 2 Quad won't work on my MB, can someone tell me which processor I can upgrade to? Thanks

...i5 wont work with that board

your best bet is to change mobo ram and cpu and start scratch, you might be able to get a few hundred more mhz in another pen4 but you would get more bang for your buck with just starting scratch

The Intel i5 quad shud work with your 775

No. It won't. Really you need to save up for a motherboard (LGA1156 would be best) and get a new processor (G6950/i3). That would substantially upgrade your processing power

also as it seems people missed your question, the board wont have a bios flash avaliable for that chip as it is just that old, reason the board wont boot is it does not support that cpu model, you would need a new motherboard to support that chip. however there are alot of cheap 775 boards avaliable now with ddr2 or ddr3 so you do have one part, just need a new foundation for that 9650 you have
