ok here we go lol. I got my bros old HDD which i would like to use instead of my current HDD so i put my XP cd in and pressed a key to boot windows setup. I went to setup and it said something like "cannot see windows on hdd or something, please make sure you have a copy of windows etc and insert cd and press enter" but i have ,my legit copy of XP in there and i cant get no further keeps saying this.
So i slaved it up with my current HDD to find it would allow me to format and install XP on it, which i did, and it was unstable wouldnt boot up etc, so i decided in the end to go back to my original HDD. But now at bootup it says please select a OS to boot up and showing 2 options both being WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION, i only have 1 hdd connected, and it thinks or something that i have 2 and asking which one to load and more annoying my HDD i use is option 2 so i must be present at boot up to select. So a couple questions if any1 can help

1. how do i get around it saying please insert a following windows CD
2. How do i get rid of it asking to select from 2 operating systems?

Boot into windows, open boot.ini (c:\boot.ini by default) and remove the 2nd option under operating systems (or which ever option you didn't pick to boot up)

ok thanks for that just another question, any answers how i can install XP on this new hdd i got without it stopping me and asking for the cd when its in there already

this is what it says, bearing in mind this CD is legitimate copy of windows!

"Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a valid Windows CD.

Please insert one of the following Windows product CD's..."

EDIT::!!!!!
i think i got the problem solved, its an upgrade cd im using so it want the original OS CD in there first to verify the HDD so i can move on but i do not have this CD as its my bros old HDD and he sold everything else wit it, so is there anyway of installing this windows on this HDD without having to put the 98 or what ever OS CD it needs???

You need a 'qualifing product' to use the upgrade cd. You have to get a full version to install from scratch.

bit i got a HDD a few months ago brand new from the shop, and i ued this XP cd to install a fresh XP on it and it never asked for any other CDS

There is no way to validate it without buying a Full Version, or having an older Windows CD to validate your upgrade..
