how many times can XP be installed???

hey guys, i bought a copy of windows xp home edition tonight for 200 bucks, and what im wanting to know is how many times if theres even a limit as to how many times i can install this? i have had "backup" versions of the OS before, but some of them were maxed out, i think it was 30 installs or something. anyways, if i open this pretty green 200 box, how much will i be able to use it. i have 2 pcs to put it on.... help??
 
You're not supposed to put it on two PCs at the same time. But as far as installing it on one computer, as many times as you want.
 
Actually, I done like 5 times total with the same XP CD... I just never activate online. But, right now... Something got pretty smart. So, it won't install anymore, but only works just for backup. Oh Well... Just gonna be careful. Don't let FBI get ya, lol...

Yeah it is illegal, don't do it... Last time I did was like 4 years ago... I never reuse it after that time and continue, I wouldn't do it again. You got money, you could afford it. Anyway, Yeah... Don't do it.

That's crap also. I have installed it on two personal machines from the CD at the same time and activated both of them. I have numerous licenses here, but why bother? The same key works on both.

At least know what you're talking about before you post.

you must be using a corp. key or a hacked version. when you use the corp xp you dont have to activate, just install and go. when using a retail or oem version you install then you have to activate it with the microsoft server which will cross check the key with their list to see if its real or not. ive had to call microsoft on several occasions to get a new activation key. or maybe microsoft dosent give a **** about canada, no one else does.

if you read some of SirKenin's posts he is very much against pirating software.

Well it is. And I am against pirating software.

And I've been in computers for 18 years. In business since 1998. I used to be in a pirate ring before 3/4 of this board was even born.

The version of XP that I did it with is XP Pro OEM. You can activate it as many times as you like. When you change hardware too often, as I do, then you will have to call Microsoft to reactivate it rather than use the automatic activation.

Any way you look at it, you're incorrect and that's all there is to it. Chill out. :)

U can install it has much has u want but after 4 or 5 time activation by internet u will have to do it by phone.
 
heheh....i dunno where you got 4 or 5 but I know I've messed with my comp so much that ive used the same CD-key from the original Compaq that it WAS, at least 15-20(maybe more) times and finally they told me that I can no longer activate it using that CD-key...which crap since it is still on one computer....so I resorted to *other* means, but would you call it pirating if you had the license but they didnt let you use it so you kinda had to do it? (This was before I figured out about ghost imaging).

Well, if you have your own legit CD and CD key, then you can install it on two computers. Technically, it would be wrong, but if you just phone them for two activations, they'll give it to you, I'm sure.

You can activate it up to 31 times, I heard.

Wow. I have a corp edition of XP Home which came with the family PC, and I activated that about 10 times before I had to call Microsoft. However OEM and personal versions can only be activated an additional time, and after that you need to call Microsoft.
