How to fix this network issue for my desktop?

Recently I've been having some network trouble with the desktop in my living room. Right now I have Comcast internet service, which is the 50 Mbps plan. Now on my desktop computer, I've only been getting roughly 3-4 Mbps speed. The technicians from Comcast came and looked at it and said everything is fine from their side, which is indeed true.

This is because if I use my laptop and wirelessly connect to the network, the speed is fine, of course with the speed dropping when I move away from the router, but that is expected. If I hardwire it, the speed is fine, no matter where it is wired from in my home. So I decided to do some testing today to determine what might be the cause of this issue. I took my laptop to the living room and hardwired it with a 30 foot long Ethernet cable and my speed was around 60-70 Mbps. I did the same with my desktop, and the speed was, again only 3-4 Mbps (I made sure the wireless was off).

I do have an Asus PCE-N15 wireless card in the desktop and I've updated all of its drivers as well. I also took the wireless card out and just used the basic LAN connection I already have with the motherboard and updated those drivers (which were already up to date). The last thing I did was change up the DNS settings but none of that worked. My speed on the desktop was still 3-4 Mbps.

Can anyone please help me resolve this issue? I can't seem to figure out what the issue is, considering my laptop worked fine when doing the testing like I did with the desktop. Will I have to change up some more settings on the desktop to fix this? I would really appreciate some help on this.

Thanks!

It could be you have some adware/malware on your system or possibly some software causing the issue. Please do the following so we can get an idea of what is running at bootup.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Vista and Windows 7 users must right click on the hijackthis icon and click on run as. If the run as option doesn't appear then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on the icon to get it to appear.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

I see a few things that need to go away.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.

•Please close all open programs and internet browsers.
•Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
•Click on Delete.
•Confirm each time with OK
•Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
•Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
•You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

Test your internet speed now.

Yea, I tested it, but unfortunately it is still the same low speed. I tried running it in safe mode, however, and the speed was perfect, at around 55-60 Mbps when hardwired and around 15-20 Mbps wireless. But normal boot, it goes back down to the low 3-4 Mbps.

So it seems its a software issue at bootup. Post a fresh hijackthis log so we can try stopping some unnecessary programs.

Rerun hijackthis and place checks next to the following entries. Make sure you run as admin again or it won't work properly.

Then click on fix checked and reboot your system and test your speed. It could be the google drive sync program. If its still slow then we need to disable more. I have to get ready for work now can't help you until tonight.

You can try removing the rest of the 04 entries one at a time to try and find the culprit. You can reenable them using the msconfig utility.

I've disabled every one of those entries, however the speed hasn't changed much. After disabling all at once, the speed did go up by .5, so it is averaging around 4.5 Mbps both wireless and hardwired. However, it's still not the expected 15-20 Mbps I'm supposed to get.

Can you try using a different browser and see if the results are the same?

I apologize for the late reply, kind of got busy in the last few days. I tried it in another browser, but it didn't seem to fix the issue. I was wondering, when running Windows in safe mode, are all the files listed in the HijackThis log file disabled? Or are some of them still running? If I try to disable each of them one by one, I might be able to figure out which one is causing the issue.

Also strangely, each time I restart my computer, it keeps asking me to input the network password. This shouldn't be happening, is there any way for me to make it so the password is saved without having to constantly input it?

Ok, do this. Click start, and in the search bar, type msconfig and hit enter. Uncheck all entries in the startup tab and click on apply. Reboot and see if issue persists.
