How to uninstall windows 98

hey my mom needs to uninstall windows 98 and put on xp on her laptop but when i go to add/remove programs to remove windows 98 it doesnt come up as an option to uninstall

The XP installer will remove 98 and the Fat32 primary as well. The problem will be finding drivers for what make and model laptop? While you can install XP onto Fat16/32 it's native platform is NTFS like NT/2000 and now Vista.

The problem there will that most of the original softwares for 98 will be useless on XP being not the newer version but normally seen on the different type of primary partition where MS Dos won't work. There's no uninstall Windows option since 98 or any other version is the actual operating system. Control Panel's add/remove programs feature is an option seen in Windows.

Simply booting from the XP installation disk will see the two options of repairing a current installation of XP or installing a new copy. The installer can also remove the present Fat32 primary and create a totally new NTFS primary but sees all files on the drive wiped out. You can also simply allow the 98 installation to be removed and install XP onto the Fat32 primary and later convert that from Fat to NTFS. http://aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.htm

You can't uninstall an operating system from within itself. You can either do an upgrade install of XP or do a fresh install of XP by inserting the XP cd and deleting existing partitions and then repartition and then format and install. Make sure you back up any data that you need saved if you do the fresh install.

Lol... he won't know what your talking about... hes new
Just how you said that sounds so technical, very good though

Unfortunately it will be a step by step process for anyone new to working with even Windows as the OS. The XP installer itsellf will automatically delete the existing Windows installation. That would see a fresh copy of XP on a Fat32 primary without touching any non MS files and folders.

The main problem besides the slight performnace loss seen with XP on any Fat16/32 primary is that none of the current programs will work. Exisitng files created by 98 apps may also be useless as well. The newer version will need newer softwares and games as well as the availability of the driver support. The quesion now is the make and model laptop in question?
