How to use Physx on my intel + AMD build?

HI guys,

In my rig, I use i5-4670K + Radeon 7990. I want to use Physx ( I heard it is possible through my CPU). Can anyone tell me how to do it??

Thank you,

You can set PhysX to use the CPU, but you won't get a good result. You'll find the game will lag. If you really want to use PhysX and have it look good, trade in your card for a GTX 770 or 780.

Oh... didn't know it'll do more harm than bring in benefits..

So if I play this game which is heavily NVIDIA biased, then even a GTX 770's physx will beat 7990?

If it's running well without the PhysX then don't bother changing anything.

It is not though lol. I'm comparing my rig with someone who has SLI GTX 680 and that person runs this game flawlessly, and I perform nowhere near that.

Well for the sake of a single game I don't think it's worth replacing your 7990 with an NVIDIA card, unless it's the only game you play of course and your life depends on it. ;)

The PhysX is probably helping the guy with SLI'ed 680s out, but if you go and enable PhysX on your CPU then as Travis said, the game will run slow. This is the whole reason why NVIDIA does PhysX on the graphics card instead.

Is the game actually playable on your 7990? I never want to have to ask that question again by the way. :P

Unless you have an nVidia GPU then you shouldn't even enable PhysX. Otherwise you'll lag like crazy as the computer tries to process it.

Firstly, his dual 680's are more powerful than your 7990, so he will get better performance regardless, though how much will vary from game to game.

Secondly, Physx is a technology for doing advanced physics on the GPU rather than CPU, but only in games that support it. You can enable it but like has been mentioned, it will cripple your CPU because it is not designed for the Physx code to be run on it and to run all of the game calculations as well.

Note that it is only in games that support it. Very few games do support it, and those that do it really isn't something to write home about. It is cloth moving more fluidly and extra particles on explosions, it isn't some massive difference that is hugely noticeable between Physx enabled and disabled, it is all little things.

Either disable it and you will not see the difference unless you know what to look for, or (and this would be silly imho) swap in your 7990 for whatever Nvidia equivalent you can then afford. It would be a waste of time and money to do this though because so few games support it and those that do have very little difference with or without it

Yea, I know I've been bugging everyone on the same topic. I will shut up now... Yea, I do play this one game a lot but I will just stay quiet for now lol sorry guys

OK, I thought my 7990 is stronger than his SLI 680... well it was my assumption. Thanks for clearing it up.

So... physx isn't reaely a performance boost, but rather the option to play 'extra' effects so to speak?

Pretty much, yes.

As Aastii said, it's not really that special anyway, so it's not anything to get too hung up about.

Just let it go and enjoy the game.
