first i want to say i'm sorry i am suggesting this when there is so much better out there but i am thinking this will get me by for a year. so...

I plan to use old CRT monitor and keyboard and mouse i have now.

am i missing anything ? anybody have any knowledge of these parts being bad choices ? my goal is to get it as cheaply as possible and need it to do basic office work and net for about a year at least.

Basic office and net? Thats absolutely fine. If you wanted, you get XP Home and save a bit.

If it helps you any more, I do fairly heavy office work on a computer that's WORSE than that, and it's fine.

You'll be fine for normal computer use, ie. email and internet, and maybe some games from pre-2000 or so. You have a PCI-e slot if you want to get a better video card later, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Just upgrade to 1GB of ram (now or later) and you'll be fine.

Look at the combo section, you can get an Athlon 64 3400+ and that motherboard for $99. I got those earlier, and it was a terrific deal, both performed great, even in gaming.
 
so rry after looking at them closer they dont have onboard video so i think i'll stick with what i have unless someone has a cheaper alternative.

oh i forgot in my list that i already have a NEC optical drive.

The gigabyte motherboard you posted above does have integrated video.
 
something happened and i didnt see the right page cause now i do see it.
they are offering that deal on three different boards so i must have seen one of them twice. thanks.

so what would be a better choice the 3500 or the Sempron 3400 ? and which fan to go with the 3400 ?

Do you mean the Athlon 64 3400+, or the Sempron 3400+? Deffinetly the Athlon 64/motherboard combo.

Look at the Alpine 64 cooler, thats what I used for mine.
 
the sempron is the one i would need the cooler for but i dont think i'm gonna go that cheap and maybe stick with the 3500 AM2.

i really dont have a set number.

i started out wanitng a 939 system then went to AM2 then Conroe then that is when my Wife got pregnant again. and nothing about my wife is normal so that is already adding to my medical bills.

anyway my original target was 1000 but now as i know what i can get by with (the minimum) i'm just trying to get a stable system to hold me for about a year.

this is where i'm at right now.

this gets me to 492.82 shipped and tax. which when i finalize the list i'm going to shop around and see if i can find a no tax for TN site but so far on this stuff EGG has them cheaper and it offsets any tax savings.
if you can help get me lower then by all means please do.
 
 
thanks for the suggestions (that top link takes me to one i think is a little bit out of my budget)
but the suggestions are exact opposite of the way i'm going now.you increased in monetary value. nothing i would do will utilize a dual core as of now. and i am willing to sacrifice every part of this build in less than a year and a half anyway, or just pass it down to my little girl to play with and then i will build a Conroe 6400 or 6600 system.

i think the system i have picked is as low as possible and am even thinking i will try to get 1GB.
that case might have been considered but i already have a Black NEC - 3550 that is not but a couple months old so the case i need to be black.
Thanks anyways but i think i might be as low as i can go.
