HP DVD840 does not recognize DVD discs

Suddenly my HP DVD840 burner will not recognize any DVD disc. It has no problem with data or audio CD's. Running Windows XP Pro SP2.

Any advice?

Do blank, burnt, or commercial DVDs? I've seen some DVD drives that have actually lost the ability to read DVDs. Perhaps that's the case with yours?

Also, just a side note/test...will it burn CDs?

It will not recognize blank or commercial DVD's. All DVD burning software reports "drive not ready". It will burn regular CD's.

I suspect it's just a bad drive. As I mentioned, this does happen. Actually, my parents have a DVD Player. It will play VCDs, audio disks, and anything EXCEPT DVDs...
