HP Laptop with Win8 will not update to Win 10

I'm out of town and my cheap Asus Lap top is unbearably slow so I was going to just buy another laptop when my sister offered me her HP Stream x360 Win8 Lap top because she can't figure it out. I have completely ignored Win8 right from the beginning because I heard so many horror stories and I don't know how to do anything on it.

It was a brand new computer bought as a Christmas gift and has a sticker on it saying “free Win10 Upgrade”, but it says the computer doesn't have enough memory to install Win10.

So does anybody know what the deal is with this memory problem? I think it must be something to do with all these apps, but I really don't know anything about apps or how to disable them.

Update, I finally figured out how to close some of these apps and open up task manager to shutdown the rest. Then I had to search to find out how to do a disk cleanup and download Windows 10. Its checking the PC now and it looks like it might work now. Thanks anyway

The main things you need to check are how much ram is free and if the reserved system partition has enough free space to update itself. Did you get it going?

Thanks John, it finally installed and is in the app selection stage right now. I'm just trying to decide what not to install because I just don't like some of this stuff running in the background. I'm also not sure how much RAM there is yet.

im on a hp stream right now. it only has 2 gb ram. what i did was make a bootable win 10 stick and install it that way......

I heard some issues in upgrading win 8 to win 10. Some would say that they never had an idea of these issues. The thing is most are reverting back to Windows 8.

I didn’t notice how much free disk space before I upgraded, but I only have 1.78 GB now.

I did everything I could to gain more space and I believe the old Win8 is gone, but the disk is still full. I was thinking about replacing the hard drive, but I don’t know how to move the OS across to the new drive.

You must have it partitioned weird because on a 250gb drive you should have about 231gb of space, unless that was a typo? Is it a regular hdd or an SSD? 250gb for an HDD is quite small nowadays. You would either have to put both drives in a desktop system and clone or use a usb drive adapter such as this.

Its a new computer as far as being used. My sister got it this past Christmas, but hasn't used it yet because she didn't know how to use Win8. I believe the drive is an SSD according to some old ads I saw although Amazon say it is no longer available.

The above is not the exact same model and I can't seem to find the video I watched earlier for the Stream x360

So if she hasn't used it yet then she shouldn't be running out of space. You can download windirstat to see what is using up the space.

Thanks John, I just downloaded windirstat and ran it.
Well it looks like 20.9 GB is Windows, 4 GB is user and 2.6 GB is programs like MS Office and Google.

I accidentally put 3.1 GB of pictures while trying move photos from my sisters phone to a flash drive which kept crashing because it was trying to move the photos to the computer, the flash drive and also back to the smartphone.

You should see bigger usage somewhere. Those numbers are normal. Can you post the image you get from windirstat?
