I finished the build! (I think)

Alrighty, bed time for me, but it wouldn't be the same without yet another question: I finally finished everything tonight, plugged it all in and turned on the PC.

Well, it went past the POST screen so fast I couldn't press DELETE to get into the BIOS! Maybe I need to be quicker?

Furthermore, there were no beeps at all. Not a single beep to say it's okay, or any error beeps either. Could something be wrong?

Finally, where it all ended was an error about loading a boot disk and pressing ENTER to try again. I figure this message is normal, but when I pressed ENTER to see what would happen, nothing did. Could this mean my keyboard doesn't work yet?

Thoughts on all this? Not sure what to do at this point. I'd feel more comfortable hearing that single beep. :)

Night night!

EDIT: In case this helps, I connected the "HD" cable from my case to my motherboard. There is a connector on the motherboard for "Speaker", but my case doesn't seem to have a "Speaker" cable. Does this matter, or should the sound come from the motherboard itself? Should I use the "AC 97" cable instead?

Confirm the delete key is the correct button in your mobo manual. If it is, press it quicker. :P

Actually, that's a good thing. You don't want to hear beeps. ;)

In the BIOS, set your your CD/DVD drive to boot first in the hard disk priority section. Make sure you have your OS in the drive. Usually pressing enter, at the most, will just duplicate the message - it doesn't mean that anything is wrong with your keyboard. Are you using a USB or PS/2 cable to connect the keyboard?

If your case doesn't have a speaker, don't worry about it. Beep codes will come from the mobo.

Actually, the first time I turned it on, I hadn't turned the monitor on yet, so when I did, that's why it had gotten past the start up screen so quick!

I tried a second time and it stayed on the screen longer that time.

Really? I had always heard that you should hear a single beep.

It's a USB keyboard. I assume it should work even before I install the software that came with it, right?

I was thinking I might leave the BIOS options for boot order alone, but just do the one-time "Boot from CD" option whenever I need to boot from a disc. I figure this might make boot-up time quicker since it won't need to check the CD drive, especially if there *is* a disc in there, like an audio CD.

That's what I thought, but shouldn't I still hear the beep?

It depends on the BIOS. I've have MoBo's in the past that would bee regardless, but my current one only beeps once for each USB-attached device.. When I had my keyboard and mouse, two beeps; Changed keyboards and now only one; if I switch out the mouse, too, nothing.

My mobo manual lists the beep codes and it even says 1 beep means everything is okay, but it doesn't explicitly say that I should hear a beep when it starts up.

Oh well, I guess that means everything is working! Now I just need to hope it doesn't fall apart in a few days. :)

I'll post some pictures later when I get home.

If you dont have a case speaker hooked up or your board doesnt have a built in beeper you wont get your beep tone. If you Keyboard is USB you will need to use a PS/2 keyboard to get into the bios to enable USB keyboard support.

Well, my motherboard manual refers to beep tones, so I assume it's able to produce them. I don't know...

Yeah, I wondered if I'd have to use PS/2 adapter for the keyboard during the initial stages. I'll try that.

If you board or case didnt have a speaker you can go to a small computer store and I sure they would have a old case speaker or you can just get one of these

OK. I'm only speaking from personal experience. I've owned three motherboards and beeps have never been good news, or normal operating sounds. :)

Nah, sounds like you've done a great job. Your research here at CF seems to have paid off. Congrats. ;)

Now that I think about it, I don't think my current computer beeps either!

Thanks! Too bad I couldn't use the Freezer 7 Pro, but my original intention was to use the stock cooler anyway. I only started looking at aftermarket coolers when buying the CPU OEM was an option, then I just decided to get one anyway. At least I had the stock as backup! As long as it's quiet, I don't mind if it doesn't cool as well as the other one, since I don't OC or anything like that.

Later, when you post pics, can you supply a list of the components that you used for this build? :o
