I need a new Dell PC for gaming. Stuff like World of Warcraft and shooters IE: FEAR or Half Life 2.

Are these new Core 2 Duo Processor's good for gaming ?

I want at least 1 gig of ram and at least an 80 GIG hardrive.

Looking to spend 500-600 on just the PC with no monitor or anything, just focusing on the processor, ram and hardrive.

Later iam going to get a PCI graffix card for gaming but right now iam just wondering about the PC.

These PC's have 4 slots for memory upgrades. This look like a good system for gaming ?

^^^^^^ BECAUSE
1. Cheaper less quality parts
2. If you want high end graphics you most likely need new power supply
3. Can BUILD a system for cheaper (on average)
4. You get better parts for cheaper which goes back to number 3

EDIT: To answer your question yes core 2 duo's are good for gaming.

If you are going to be buying this for gaming, I would also recommend that you try to build it yourself. Dell will put low-quality PSU's in their computers that will burn out on you rather quickly, and you could buy the same components for much cheaper. (although the OS will cost you $200) The biggest problem is that they are getting more and more proprietary, and so if you want to upgrade something, don't count on just being able to slip something new in there... Overall, you could get a decent gaming tower for about $800 ballpark.

Thats why iam getting a dell because I dont know how to Build a PC and it is cheaper to just get the dell that already has an operating system installed.

The PSU in my old dell never burned out. I put 2 DVD drives a 3.5 floppy upgraded the graffix card and had full memory in the PC.

I dont plan on running a bunch of hardives or other drives. Prolly only a 256 MB Card.

*edit*

I was reading that alot of games today are not really being held back by the CPU. its the GPU that really effects the FPS.

So I was thinking maybe I should just say forget it to getting the Core 2 duo and just focus on memory instead. and then get a nice GPU

I was looking at the PC's at Ibuypower but they dont seem cheaper then dell. Maybe a bit more expensive and they have that Flashy thing going on. All that neon and see though case's.

I dont need all that, its just gonna sit in the desk case and drain power 24/7 :D

Those case's look like they come with better power supply's. and thats good but are the other componants that much better ?

Well, to tell you the truth, you won't be happy with a dell. As soon as you "upgrade" it, it will die on your very quicly. The older dell's psus didnt burn out because of the general low power consumption. But todays high end video cards will break a weak PSU.
You can get a dell if you please, but don't expect much. Especially with a $500 budget, with a dell, good luck even getting one with a video card!

dell dosent offer very good video cards.

I will be buying that from another site online. I plan on spending around 200 on the card after the 500 spent on the system.

I just asked on on the dell forums about upgrades and the power supply unit.

Worst cased scenario, with 4 gigs of ram in a Dimension E520 with 2 DVD drives and a 515 MB card.

Please stay away from Dell. I've told my stories here a few times about how many problems they gave me over the summer. Spend a little more money and get a decent machine built for you. Are you near NC? I could even build it for you :P

Iam in michigan.

My first PC was a nightmare, it was some slow beast some guy built for me. Years ago tho.

Then I got my first dell. Iam on a 4100 Dimension :P

Its OLD and time to upgrade.

I really dont want to go much over 600 for just the system with no GPU

Its just not nessesary. Check out this one with 2 Gigs of ram.

*edit*

add 1 gig and its 619.00

I was also looking at the Dell Factory Outlet and you can get some nice deals on new systems there aswell. Usually 100.00 off

Seriously, get away from DELL. And this is coming from someone who bought one and it didn't even have IDE ports on the motherboard! And this was a new one!

Don't be put off by building your own computer. There is all this hype about it but it is really quite simple.. and with all of us here at CF we can help you along the way!

Dell, lets see..

I have a dell XPS 400 3.0ghz pentium D, 1gb of ram, with vista and radeon x1800xt 512mb.

Stock 350w PSU

Runs everything i play perfectly (F.E.A.R, Halo, CS:S BF2)

I dont see anything wrong with a dell machine.

You are a n00b

Whats the problem?

He probably didn't see the date and replied, if he did see the date maybe he just felt like putting in a comment, atleast it was a useful one in the thread.

taylormsj it seems like your the noob here, calling someone a name but not inputting any useful information.

Yeah Dells aren't that great man, lots of people have problems and a minority who don't.
