I need (want) a new graphics card

Hey

Basically I have a Radeon HD 6670 1gb card at the moment. I want 2gb of VRAM instead of 1gb, what's the best way to go about this?

What is the cheapest?

Cheers

Well I do want it, as I want to play games in 1080p @ 60fps and I don't seem to be able to do that currently, even at the lowest quality settings so I have come to the conclusion it's the lack of VRAM (unless I'm wrong there?)

So if I want to play in 1080p, then I think I need 2gb.

Whats the best way of getting it?

EDIT: in 1080p it's just not smooth at all at any setting. I want smooth full HD gameplay

you should be fine with 1gb @ 1080p. If you are not seeing acceptable frame rates then you need to upgrade to a stronger card, not more Vram.

Even though the frame rates arent great on low quality settings as well?

Ok so a stronger card how? What specs am I looking for?

My card currently runs at 800mhz (which I push to 900 using the AMD software) And the memory (I think) runs at 1150mhz.

Thanks

how fast it is clocked has nothing to do with it being a powerful card. It is lacking in shaders. For games you need a 6770 or higher or GTS450 (gtx550) or higher. Otherwise you will run out of power.

Ah ok, I hadn't looked into shaders as I wasn't sure what it meant.

What is it measured in? What sort of numbers am I looking for for what I want?

shaders are measured in whole numbers. They are graphics cores.

Look for 800 or more for AMD or 192 or more for AMD.

Just had a quick look at that one, they are going for a little too much money.

I was sort if looking around the 100-120 GBP mark, be willing to go a bit further if I have to. Or is that not realistically achievable?

And thanks for that number, but 800 what exactly? I've seen 192 bit or something somewhere before.

I dont really consider myself to be a noob but I obviously have a lot to learn about graphics cards yet...

Okay with that price range look into the 6850 or the 6870 if you can find it cheap enough. You'll more than double your performance with either of those cards.

The 6850 looks good thanks for that suggestion, only thing that concerns me is that it says it's 775mhz when my current one is 800mhz (being used at 900)

Is that likely to be a problem? And back to my original question, is this the sort of thing I am looking at to run games smoothly @ 1080p?

Cheers

Higher resolution games require more powerful cards. You'll have no issue maxing almost anything out with the 6850.

what games are you playing?

And the speed is not nearly as important as the core count. 1000 cores @ 2MHz would far trump 2 cores at 1GHz.

Right ok I think I understand it a little more now cheers, as I said I was just looking at 800mhz previously and thinking that was good.

I like the look of the 6850 so far, and I'll check out that list of other suggestions too.

This may be a different debate entirely, but is it worth checking out the nvidia range also?
