I think I've screwed my computer up while trying to install RAM

Right, here's what happened: I unplugged everything from my computer then opened the case up to install more RAM but there was a bunch of wired leading to a single plug that where in the way of the spare RAM slot so I unplugged them then fitted the RAM but afterwards the computer wouldn't do anything at all when I turned it on, first I thought it was the RAM but I quickly noticed that I forgot to plug the wires back in so I did. However, even though the computer then turned on and the fan came on and the optical drives beeped I got a red LED next to the first RAM slot and the monitor didn't come on.

I have tried refitting both sticks of RAM, leaving one in and one out but still I get the same problem.

My friend tells me I probably killed the RAM because I didn't use a anti-static band. Could this be likely?

I hope it is just the RAM, that's a very cheap thing to replace.

People really over play the damage static electricity does. I've improperly handled RAM and other computer componets, even gettign sparked by a few and have yet to damage a componet. It's likely that you plugged something in wrong or bumped something else while you were putting in the RAM. Also do you know you have the correct RAM?

is the RAM the correct speed? also did you bump your GPU? and lawsons right static is bad but the only thing it kills right away is the CPU

Thanks for letting me know.

I tried booting the computer with just the old RAM and it still didn't work so I'll check if I knocked anything out.

ESD is a big threat to computer components and frankly you have been very lucky especially if you have seen sparks. ESD can happen even when you don't notice it and to be careless like that is sure way for you to get damaged parts.

I feel so damn stupid! The VGA cable was just loose on the moniter! The computer was never broken!

now tell your friend that Matt from ComputerForum.com awards him the DoucheBag of the day award :good:

lol just playing.
