I want to Make my own case(help please)

man so many replay's ... to answer half the questions .. I wanted to make a wooden case .. as like a project .. i was planning to make it out of like timber .. not MDF ..

and about the fire case, i'm sure my computer won't catch on fire .. i mean ..when have u seen ur case that hot that it'd set some wood fire .. i'm sure my CPU would fry and shut off my computer B4 it sets onfire... and + its not like i'm not gona put any venterlation in .. + i put wood in the fire all the times ..its so hard to get it started .. so i don't think .. it'd catch on fire form my PC..

It wasn't something I was planning to move around alot so the wight isn't a issue... i was jst looking for a cool wooden look i could always paint it .. if i wanted to ..

price wasn't the issue cause I was thinking of slowly building over like weeks .. so i'd be happy spending a few hundy on it, I'm pretty confident in my wood works skills(as i've built lots of other things) .. i wanted to build a case for the look not cause i needed one .. so i'm not gona get a $30 case ..

+i've seen them with wooden cases on Tom's hardware .. now who eva said it was stupid .. then .. if it was that stupid y would have so many other ppl have done it.

I was looking for ideas or guide lines.. not ppl putting me down for my idea's ..

make sure you add room for expansion, just in case you upgrade in the future. for example, even if you are only planning on using 1 CD drive, make a port for a second, just in case you want to add another one further down the road.

it would help if you use the Lian-Li's motherboard tray, that way you dont have screw around too much with the placement of ports\etc, you can just use the tray as a guide.

donno what type of wood prob pine .. I'll prob spray them is what i ment with painting .. i spray painted my shelves (which i also made from pine wood) which turned out looking great.
 
No, don't paint it! I would use a maple plywood, that come already finished, etc. and looks pretty good. What are the type of tools you are going to be using? Are you going to be doing the whole handsaw, screwdriver thing, or do you have access to power tools? I was actually thinking of doing something similar to this idea, but we moved and my Dad took down his cabinet shop. ): If you have the right tools you could also consider doing some hardwood inlays. You should use birch ply... it's heavy duty wood that doesn't break easily.. and it's fairly inexpensive.

I use it for sub boxes. I've got my Diamond D612D2 (12" Dual 2ohm) in one right now that is 3/4" all the way around (3/4" @ 1.25 cu/ft after porting slot-ported @ 35Hz run at 714w/RMS), and is only held together with liquid nails and small guide nails, it hasn't blown apart yet ;) (that's a tough wood!)

I'm aware you're talking about a computer case.. but if birch ply can handle the swift blow of a subwoofer, it can handle PC components.. and again, it's inexpensive wood to buy :D

Yeah, makmillions got a point. Although the price of lumber/plywood sometimes depends on where you are located. It might be kind of pricey to go with prefinished maple, but I prefer it to birch. You should look into getting it edge banded too. :cool:

Yeah, those hardwoods are beautiful but can get very pricey, at least around here. But I would say hey, if I am going to spend the time doing it I might as well go all out! :D
 
It's up to him. If he has the $ and the time to do plywood, then do plywood. If not, he can do some pine or something like that.
 
those wood does look pretty .. i was planing to do it slowly .. maybe do a bit every week .. so hopefully it won't seem like it cost that much ..
 
this idea of yours is doable. two things you might want to consider...

1. cases are mostly metal because the components need to be grounded properly. make sure your case can do the same.

2. metal disperses heat better than wood. a couple of fans alone may not be enough to keep your stuff from getting overheated.

planning to have a metal chassis ne ways ... well just gona cut one outa case... hopeing thats enough ... and metal chassis for harddrives too ...

I'm currently building a wooden case for GCSE Design Technology at school.
It's coming on brilliantly - really pleased.
So, basically what I'm doing is I took an old ATX case I had lying around, stripped it almost bare down the the aluminium chassis rails and I'm using that as a frame on which to build my wooden/perspex design.
I'm using thick MDF and Plywood to build it, as well as a bit of 'reclaimed' Mahogany from an old school desk to give it some quality. The reason I'm using the frame is to get the dimensioning right and so all my parts will fit in perfectly.
I'm soundproofing it with some fireproof flooring underlay, and I'm doing things like making my own hinges and fixtures for the doors etc.
I'll post some pictures when I feel it's done.
 
wow thats awesome .. yea i was pretty much thinking of the same thing using a old atx case as a frame ... yea pictures will be cool
 
you know personally good luck to you if you want to make it from wood and all but I am looking at new gaming cases atm and there seriously cheap so instead of the hard word and cuts. just buy a new one man...
