I'm Desperate-Shortbeep then Shutdown

Hi, I have been searching for hours for a solution to my problem.
First off, I believe the specs to my computer will be useful. If you require others I'll see if I can get them.

Dell Inspiron 9300
2gigs ddr2 ram (Bestbuy said it was compatible. I don't remember brand name etc and have lost the packaging).
256mb dedicated Graphics card (nVidia Go 6800 if I recall correctly)
1.73 ghz Pentium M processor
17inch Monitor
80 gig (7200 rpm I think) Hard drive.

Now, I'll get to the problem. My computer has been emitting 1 short (loud) beep followed by and immediate shutdown (sort of). Everything appears to be off and the computer is silent but the num-lock key light stays lit for another minute or two. This will usually happen while playing World Of Warcraft, how ever it happened once while tpying up a paper for school.

I have looked and looked but there is nothing online about 1 short beep followed by shutdown. I have a nasty feeling my CPU may be overheating but I am hoping that is not it.

Things I have done.
I have tried running speed fan, but my fans do not show up in the proggram.
I have run complete virus scans with AVG and Avast (both had been updated right before the scan).
I ran Adware SE home and nothing serious turned up, just a low risk cookie which I went in and manually removed.
I also ran a Spyware Terminator test and nothing turned up there and the same with Spybot.
I used Abexo's Free Registry cleaner and that did not help.
I also ran CCleaner (just a shot in the dark).
In addition I use Comodo Firewalla and my internet is through a firewalled router so I THINK I can safely say it is not a virus, however I am now clueless which is why I am here.

I am fairly computer savvy. I mean I don't know all the technical terms, but I can get around the computer quite well and am fairly comfortable in working on my computer on my own. I just need help! Also I am just a poor highschool student so I would like to avoid any costly fixes.

Any advice and ideas are appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Bump, come on please help! Just telling me to buy random parts that I may not need doesn't help me all that much, thanks though.

you may want to try cpu-z to show your ram and other hardware such as mobo http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

plus think about buying...YES buying a AV program instead of relying on all the free stuff for security of your system.... ANYTHING other than Norton should do and i reccomend PANDA http://www.pandasoftware.com/ or bitdefender http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/ .

using FREE registry cleaners can lead you down a dark and merky path, but if you must use free ones then i would suggest ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ . Also you could try(if you have your OS disc) running "sfc /scannow" from start>run *sfc /scannow" (without quotes)

which will replace any system files that have been modified due to corruption or deletion either by yourself or 'some free registry cleaner'.

also just out of interest try visiting crucial http://www.crucial.com/ to find out what ram your pc requires, they're pretty good. !!

HOPE IT ALL WORKS OUT. :)

Alright. And I will try that sfc command and get back to you and see what happens.

Here is the ram recommended: http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=FFBA603AA5CA7304

Is it possible that I bought that? That is the exact price and setup (2x 1gig dimms) that I got.

As far as something other than free I used to use Norton and at one point Macafee but when those expired I switched to AVG (and now Avast). Is there something wrong with them, may I ask? They have both gotten spectacular reviews.

And, I can undo the registry changes if you think I should. I have back-ups. Although I did look through to see what was being deleted each time. Nothing struck me (not that that means anything) as being odd. All were old file extensions and program entries from uninstalled software.

And thank you VERY much for your input and help. It is much appreciated. I'll get back to you on whether it works.

Alright I ran the snc util and nothing seemed to happen at the end. Oh and my cpu is running at about 45 degrees with just two browser windows open. I dont know if that helps any though.

well 45 degrees isn't high, in fact my fiancee's pc runs at that on idle !!!

what BIOS are you running? as that will help with the beep code analysis.

you could try running this and see if it finds anything... it's pretty good but takes a while http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

do you know what your system runs at under load?.

right click on MY COMPUTER>MANAGE>PERFORMANCE LOGS AND ALERTS and see if anything there is strange .

Alright I ran Bitdefender. According to it there was 6 viruses with 13 infected files total. A lot of them were in the Norton Quarantine from when I had Norton. This adds up to 19 files. In the statistics screen it says 19 files deleted. Under that however it says something like "At least one of the files could not be disinfected or deleted" This is odd since it said 19 were deleted. I also took screen shots of the Detected problems page. I took pictures of the status that I will upload and post.

Also My CPU runs from 58ish to 69ish when being used.

My BIOS Version is Dell Inc. A04

Anything else and is there anything I need to worry about with the scan? I mean none of the other virus scanners I have used have ever picked them up. May the scanners were just junk as you seemed to suspect. Or maybe it's like a false positive thing? Anyway I'll post the screenshots for you to see

Thanks again!

Also for the detected problems i was slowly scrolling down and screen shotting, where one part of the list ends in one screen shot it will start where things left off in the next.

Thanks Again

Bump anyone? Could anyone at least explain why it says my computer is still infected even though 19/19 were deleted? At the very least. Please!

glad to see that bitdefender has proved itself again to the benefit of yourself:)

As for saying "still infected"..... is bitdefender saying it, or another security program?

You haven't mentioned if your pc is still having problems shutting down....is it....?

PS: you know that one SHORT beep at start up is normal don't you?, nearly all do this to indicate everything is ok at startup, it's the shutting down bit that concerns me.

Actually it is bit defender that is saying this. It appears at the bottom of the statistics screenshot (the first one I posted) and at the top of all of them.

I know that one short beep at start-up is normal. This beep doesn't appear at start-up though, it is a short beep immediatly preceding a shutdow after the computer has been runnning for a while.

Edit- I just realized the ones that were not disinfected are in the system restore which anti virus can not access. I found this on http://forums.techguy.org/security/558704-bit-defender-found-virus.html. I'm gonna wipe out my system restore files and create a restore point after.

let us know how it goes:):)

i just had another thought

i just realised that you are on a laptop. now that in itself wouldn't cause any different behaviour with virus than a desktop but...

does it happen when the laptop is connected to the mains?

is your battery any good?

in power options (control panel) is it set to warn of low battery or has the profile been changed, because if it isn't set to warn of low battery and it seems to happen when playing games(cpu intensive/battery consuming)
That could be the cause of the shutdown without warning(well a beep:rolleyes:)

My battery scheme is set to desktop/home use at the moment. I pretty much always keep my computer connected (via the power chord) but maybe there is something wrong with the power supply. However the problem with that would be that my alarms for shut down and low battery are set to "display message". The play sound option is unchecked.

Also, I have cleared out my restore files and created new one and I am now running Bitdefender again to see if anything turns up.

my fiance'es toshiba laptop does not always display warning message about shutdown if she's playing a game , that's why i mentioned it as a possible cause.

have you checked in the bios to see what temp the cpu will shut down at(failsafe) maybe it's set at the temperatures you have been reaching, if so... why is the laptop getting so hot?

do you leave the battery plugged in whilst using mains power as the power source? because it will cause a lot more heat generation onto the mobo and ultimately the cpu?

I am seriously running out of ideas here so if anyone wants to jump in at any point then be my guest!! LOL.

WE WILL SORT THIS OUT SOMEHOW:P:P:P

I do indeed, leave my battery in, however I could try taking it out. I WILL say that it does seem to be improving though. I don't know if maybe it was software related after all, but I gamed for about 2 hours today without a shutdown, so maybe we fixed it or it fixed itself, lol. It is kind of weird. I'll post back after the virus scan and also check the BIOS for the shutdown temp.

i shall be waiting with curiousity :D:D

let's hope we crack this soon eh:)
