I'm inheriting a new processor, need advice!

If I had that chip Id want to OC the crap outta it lol. Wasnt it like the queen bee of high performance high OC chips before i7 was around?

I'm actually a complete newbie when it comes to overclocking, so I have a lot to learn. I'm going to play some games with a CPU like this, but I plan on mostly using it for music production.

This CPU is 3.16 ghz. If i overclocked it, how fast do you think I could get it to?

i would say maybe 3.8ghz on air(with a true), you might get to 4.2 on water, its hard to tell, it also depends on what revision it is(C0, E0)

Alright guys, so I finally have the chip in my hands! So this is what I'm thinking about (so far) purchasing here to round out the computer. However, I'm confused like hell on what type of RAM to buy and what video card to purchase. I know there are votes for GSKILL in here. Anything else?

You guys have been an incredible help to me and I really appreciate it.

Go with this psu, even without a combo deal its cheaper, and a single large +12v rail:

GPU, Well, take a look at the HD4890. If you wanna look at nvidia cards, look at a GTX285, but if you go nvidia, go with this motherboard as it supports sli:

With that cpu...might wanna think about going liquid though;)

The revision is E0 if that helps.

Bomberboy, I knew I could count on you! :D But my brain is about to melt with all of the options here!!!!

I'm pretty high on the Antec combo right now. The main reason is that it's QUIET and it keeps the gear well ventilated so I don't mind dropping a little extra for it. Besides the CPU being free, I'm building this computer in the first place to write music. It's essentially my DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), however I know I won't be able to resist playing some games on it too;)

I think you're the one who recommended the Cooler Master V8, and I think that's a great idea. I'll do some overclocking, but I don't think I'm going to push it to the point where I want to mess with water cooling.

You also recommended the Rampage MOBO. Why the change of heart?

Those other mobos are just recommended if you decide you want to go with an nvidia card, as they support sli over the crossfire like the rampage;) I recommend the corsair not because of the cost, but mainly because its got a single large +12v rail so you dont need to load balance the rails. The V8 is an excellent air cooler, didnt know how far you intended to push the processor so watercooling was added int just as a suggestion.

Once again, you rule, and thanks for the feedback. Forgive my ignorance but I have no idea what "loading and balancing the rails" means in terms of a power supply. I thought with a power supply you just plugged it in;) What's your take on the Antec combo?

I've owned both ATI and Nvidia, but I'm not partial to either. So are you saying that if I choose to get the Rampage I have to get an ATI card?

Thanks!

Not HAVE to get an ati card, but it would be preferable as you could toss another ati card in down the road for crossfire. The antec combo is pretty good, the psu isnt a whole lot different than the corsair, one uses Delta internals and the other Channelwell, both are very good quality power supplies. The antec might be a bit better for airflow due to being modular, and with that combo you might as well grab it for that price, very clean power output and low ripple on the rails. Right now, the best bang for the buck cards would be an ati card, like an HD4890 for around $200 with performance in the range of that of a GTX275. And the HD4870 which is around $120 and similar performance to a GTX260;)

Bomber, your knowledge of this stuff is pretty amazing. Many thanks for the insight.

I'll stick with the Antec Combo and the V8. So if I stick with the Rampage board then I should probably go with Radeon? Yes? And can I crossfire any radeon cards?

A reviewer from new egg on the Rampage board said:

"No SLI support, however since I trust ASUS in any board design, I realized that there must have been a reason for dropping SLI support. Upon further inspection, I noticed that current Nvidia GPU models have extremely poor SLI scaling ability (10-40%) and overclocking ability - while ATI Crossfire scaling is nearly 100% and overclocking ability allows over a 25% clock increase:
Scaling = pending on what resolution you are running, adding another card gives a certain performance increase. ATI = 100% scaling = 1 card = 40 FPS - 2 cards = 80 FPS.
NVidia = 15% scaling = 1 card = 40FPS - 2 cards = 45 FPS."

Well, the reason there isnt SLI support on the rampage, is that on socket 775 you could only have sli on an Nforce motherboard, while the rampage has an intel chipset(the X48). Yes pretty much any radeon card will crossfire, but id go with at least a 4850 if you plan to crossfire, as it doesnt really make sense crossfiring two lower end cards like 4650's/4670's, as a single 4850 would be just as fast;)

If you were in my shoes would you get the Rampage and the 4850? Or should I go Nvidia?

Also, I just found this combo deal: same Antec power supply but a P138 case instead of the Twelve Hundred. My main concern however is the width of the P138 (8.1 in) versus the Tweleve hundred (8.4 in) since I'm putting that huge V8 in there.

P183 should fit the V8, its only 3/10th of an inch difference in width. I would go with the rampage, 1- better overclocking, 2- ati has better bang for the buck atm.

Again thanks for all of the help.

Do you have a preference between the P138 and the Twelve hundred?

Also, what Ram would you put into the Rampage to fuel this sucker? It can take 8 gigs. RAM is a subject where I just get totally overwhlemed so your help is very appreciated.

The P series cases are quieter than the twelve hundred, as they have less mesh and no side windows, so for your uses it would probably be better for the P.

For memory...If you dont care about price, Two sets (8gb) or these:

If you want something a little more reasonable, two sets(8gb) of these:

Or something inbetween:

I'm glad to hear the P series is quieter, but do you know how well it cools?

Regarding the RAM, I'm overwhelmed. There seems to be so many options!!! Is RAM all pretty much the same? Are you just paying for the name? I don't mind spending $90 per 4 gigs so long as the stuff is good. I used Kingston Hyper X Ram in my last computer I built and I really wasn't all that impressed with it. Can you suggest anything else? Is Corsair worth the money?

That case has pretty decent cooling with it. The memory, well, one is 1600mhz, one is 1800mhz, and the most expensive is 2000mhz. For the price..the 1600mhz mushkin has great timings and a good price, while the 1800mhz hyperx is somewhat faster(200mhz faster). Corsair generally speaking is overpriced, and i would look towards mushkin/g.skill/kingston/patriot

Sorry for all of the questions!

So all of the RAM types you listed before will work well in the Rampage?

You think the HD4850 is a good graphics card? Anything else you could recommend in the bang for your buck catagory that I can crossfire in the future?

THANKS!:D

If you wanna spend a bit more, for around $145 a 4870 1gb can be had:

Any of the ram would work, yes;)
