Increased Performance ?!?!

I had my PC built 4 years ago and it was starting to be a bit too slow.
This morning I therefore bought 1Gb of DDR RAM to improve it to 1.5Gb RAM.

Hopefully this will make a difference. I also think that it might be a good idea to upgrade my processor, currently an Athlon 2500 Barton which I think is currently at 1.83Ghz.

Do you think this is worth doing, or should I first look to overclock the current chip. I have an extra fan already built in so cooling it shouldnt be a problem.

Any thoughts or opinions greatly appreciated.
Oh, my motherboard is an M848A, not sure if this makes a difference.

I don't think you can overclock the barton core I know I can't on my 2600.

When was the last time you reformatted? Reinstalling the os cleans all the trash out and improves the speed. I'm assuming it used to run faster.

Added memory helps alot.

Reformatting is like a refresh. Great to do if you don't have a huge amount of important files n' it.

1GB should see quite a big difference...

About the processor, I don't think you would see a difference at all in performance. Old AMD's are not too known for overclocking. And you would need an aftermarket CPU cooler to make sure it stays at cool temps. I don't know if that's what you meant by "extra fan already built it".

Best thing to do is if you can, save some $$$ and get a new computer if not, think on upgrading your processor.

That is of course only if you think you need more speed after the memory you just installed.

The way he worded it sounds like it has slowed down since it was built.
I reformat all my comps about once a year.
I find that after installing programs and removing them etc, The registry gets bloated with junk. Plus stuff that is forgotten about or is hard to find cleans up real nice with a fresh install.
I real notice a big difference every time. jmho

today their not but back then a few hundred mhz was a big difference. hell my old athlon 3400 went from 2.4 to 2.8ghz on a crappy motherboard with stock cooling, so i would say its entirely possible for him.

As I recall when I bought my barton core 2600 it was disabled from AMD by cutting a trace or 2 on the die to prevent common forms of overclocking it.
