ok try rebooting and going into the BIOS and there might be something about the IR port being enabled or disabled

Go into the device manager and see if you see anything listed that seems like it could be infrared. Just because it looks like the laptop has it, doesn't mean it does, since usually companies use the same chassis (case) for multiple versions of a laptop or desktop.

Exactly what I was thinking.

If theres nothing in the device manager, BIOS, control panel, or any desktop software that indicated you have infrared, most likely you dont.
