Installing win xp pro

Hi,
New to this forum so first i'll say hi. I have a slight problem installing XP Pro and i'm not the brightest when it comes to pc's, heres the problem.
I was originally running windows 2000 on my laptop and decided i wanted to format the hard drive due to the amount of crap on it so I inserted the new xp pro disc and booted up the pc. Pressed a button and entered the setup. Setup then checked files etc.. I then pressed D which deleted the partition that the old OS was on. I then pressed enter to install XP on that partition (even though there wasn't one it still kinda creates one) it then gave me the option to format or format quick. I chose format. It formatted the hard drive and then started. with that done it then said choose partition on which to install, hit enter on the partition and it comes up with please wait while setup copies files to the windows installation folders. after that completes it then restarts the pc. The windows xp loading page comes up and after the blue bar along the bottom passes twice on the 3rd time it just freezes and the pc does nothing! anyone got any ideas what the hell to do?
I know this is real long but i just want everyone to know exactly what i've done so far!

Thanks, any help would be much appreciated.

Try formatting it again and re-instaling.

Might not have copyed some files correctly...its done that to me before.

ok, well reformat do a full format, i usualy do quick and have no problems but u can try both ways, and install again, if that dont work, try a dif disc

ok reformatted it and re installed and still no joy. Tried it about 5 times now. So i tried a different approach. I installed windows 2000 with no problems, then put the xp pro CD in and autorun brought up the setup menu. it offered me to upgrade (recommended) or fresh install. I clicked on upgrade and it ran through all the gathering information for installation etc... then it started installing, after it had finished installing it then restarted the computer and surprise surprise when it got to the win xp page the blue bar under the logo passed 3 times then stopped halfway!!!!!

Anyone else with any more ideas, cuz I'm stuck now.
I would try another disc but as i've just paid £70 for this one i can't really afford to.

cheers

Simon

It sounds like a problem with the disk...maybe you should return it to who you purchased it off and get it replaced.

Have you checked the disk for any slight scratches or smudges?

when you put in the disk, Make sure you fotmat. then when it ask you for a partition , and DELETE THE OLD ONE and hit (C = Create) a new partition and make sure you put it on NTFS partition. Try that :)

not saying it's not a legit copy, but 99% of the xp distros online are homebrews, and are stripped down to the point where they don't work.

I tried installing one once, because it claimed to be 'xp light' and it didn't even have internet explorer, or any networking tools, and i couldn't even get it to connect to the internet.

just a thought.
