Intel i7 Processors

I'm considering purchasing intel's newer model processor chip to replace my old core 2 duo E6600, but when I looked at the specs of the i7 it's socket type is an LGA 1366, as opposed to a core 2 duo's 775. Now I know the i7s need more pins to work the way they do, but does this mean I'll need a new motherboard that can support the i7 processor? as far as I can tell the specs on my motherboard only really support 775.

Yes ,currently only X58 MBs support 1366 socket ,you will have to get a new MB if you want to upgrade to I7 .If you want to keep your board you could upgrade to a current core 2 quad (ie q6600,Q9550 or Q9650 for example)

which is expensive right now.

yes quite a bit :P

Why not just upgrade to a Q9450 or something and wait until the i7 and DDR3 memory come down a bit? but i dont think its going to be anytime soon the prices drop

Anything from Q6600 and up on the quads will handle pretty much any game you throw at it with ease.

Get a new video card and wait till prices on i7/DDR3 drop to mainstream

Yea don't spend any money into getting a new CPU. Buy a good video card that you can take to the next system, when you are ready to go with i7. Then you won't be wasting money on something that you will have to upgrade again.

Dude Get a Dell

The Big Box store has a nice i7 system for a grand if you'd like. After 5 years of using a computer I never should have bought I Love It.
