Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz or Intel Pentium D 2.8Ghz?

Greetings!

I'm about to buy a new computer and I'm buying it part by part. I'm a bit confused on what processor will give me the best performance. I have a BIOSTAR P4M800 Pro-M7 and that one supports P4 and D processors, so I'm deciding whether to buy the Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz or the Pentium D 2.8Ghz ? I'm more concerned towards gaming, programming, 3D, virtual machines and multitasking heavy apps... anybody knows which processor is better for what I'm looking for?

Thanks in advance :)

- DARKGuy.

P.D.: The processor specs (as I see them on the list the provider gave me) are the following ones:

* CPU Intel Pentium 4 - Model 541 - 3.2Ghz Socket 775 1Mb Cache, 800Mhz FSB.

* CPU Intel Pentium D - Model 820 - Dual Core 2.8Ghz - Socket 775 2x1Mb Cache, 800Mhz FSB.

Pentium D is now old. You should go with the Core 2 Duo ones. But for your question, the Pentium D is better. Pentium 4 is Wayyyyy toooo oldddd.

Whoah, fast answers heh, thanks for answering! :P

Hey, I didn't know about that benchmark site! thanks for the link :). The P4 seems to be good for gaming (it gains about 10-15 fps according to the comparation with the PD) though I'm not that hungry for FPS (Eh, in any way I'll end up winning: No more playing Quake 4 in low-detail with my 933Mhz xD), the D seems real good with some multitasking and CPU-heavy tasks (like that 3DSMAX rendering and multitasking PS2 & WinRAR, IIRC) so it sounds fairly good for me.

Now just to be sure, my motherboard's manual (I already bought it a week ago) says:

* Supports LGA 775
* Supports Intel Pentium 4 processor up to 3.8Ghz
* Supports Dual Core CPU
* Front Side Bus at the following frequency ranges:
- 400Mhz (100Mhz Core Clock)
- 533Mhz (133Mhz Core Clock)
- 800Mhz (200Mhz Core Clock)
* Supports Hyper-Threading Technology

According to this, it's sure that the motherboard will accept the Pentium D processor flawlessly? I know, this might be a stupid question since I work with computers and I'm tech-savvy, but this is my first high-end PC buy in like, years (and I'm doing it alone... all of my previous computers were bought by my dad) so I just want to be sure I'm not going to waste money ^^;;;;

Edit:

@krncho: Yup, but they're too expensive for my budget right now, and I can't wait any more :/ my current computer barely can with the apps and games I run in it... I need something faster! xD.

If you can't get a Core 2 Duo, wait till after April 22nd, they come down in price!

Also, I wouldn't get either, it'll be a big waste of money to buy one, since they are old.

Well, his board won't support any of the c2d's properly, as his board only has an 800mhz fsb. But I would get a e4300 that would be your best bet.

newer games will be able to support multi threading of dual core. It's the wave of the future, especailly since quad core is coming out. By the end of the year it will be the debate of getting dual core or quad core.

I had a Pentium 4 650 OC'd to 3.74GHz and the thing ran really strong. That was the fastest single core chip I ever had. I never had a Pentium D to compare it to though. It wasn't much weaker then my 4600+ though and the Pentium 4 650 was $89. Built the whole rig for $500.
