Intermittent hang

I am running win xp 2p2 and after a period of time my system develops an intermittent freeze / hang in windows.

Try to picture moving the mouse in a circle on the desktop, every circle i complete it would have hung twice for about 1/2 a second.

I first thought this was a mouse problem or drivers etc but then i noticed it isn't just my mouse pointer its everything.

If i play a film or listen to music and even when i close down the picture / audio cuts out / hangs.

I have the n since done a fresh windows install and still have the problem.

I don't think its my temps as at the mo they are cpu=39 / mob=27.

I since then updated my sound card drivers with no avail.

At the moment i can only guess it could be my hdd which is about to fail or my mother board / memory.

Any one come across something similar?

Regards
Gary

Have you tried unplugging all your usb devices? is there a thumb drive in a usb slot?

A the moment i'm not using any.

After the fresh install i haven't re-installed anything yet.

I was getting the freezes at dinner so i rebooted and i'm not getting them at the minute so i can't imagine whats causing them.

Just to rule out my cpu and memory what program would you advise to bench these?

Just looking at my N6800 gfx card temps and they are 66deg.

Is that likely to be the problem?

The fan is set at automatic and is only running at 60%

Update: Just set my fan to manual left it a couple of minutes on 100% and its only gone down to 65deg

You video cards temps are OK. Is the HD light coming on while this freeze occurs? Did you install your chipset drivers?

Chipset drivers are installed.

Judst got the freeze, went straight into event viewer and found this -->

The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period.
