Is a Media Converter the same thing as a Modem?

I think they are, but I cannot convince my buddy, could you please explain this to me(HIM)???

I guess if you want to get to the VERY basics of a modem... To the level that it has an input and an output.. then they could be the same thing...

If you look at it in the sense that they are both converting something, then yes, they are. Generally, a Modem converts digital signals to analogue signals. A Media Converter converts files from one format to another.

However, that said, I don't think it's right to call them the 'same thing'.
