Is A New Laptop Worth It?

I recently came into a laptop that's is pretty old and was wondering if it was worth it to keep it or buy a new one. Considering this laptop was free i couldn't decide. This is the cheapest new laptop I found:
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=iB120S1&s=dhs
After spending 500 bucks just for the Notebook, It doesn't seem like it's worth my while.
The Dell comes with 256 MB RAM, Mine has 512 MB
The Dell Comes with a 40 GB Hard Drive, Same as mine
The Dell is running Home Edition, Mine is Running Professional
The Dell has a DVD Burner, which I would never use (I have DVD-ROM)
The only considerable difference is the processor is twice as fast on the Dell

As the price of the new Laptop gets higher the specs seem to change a little, but remember, i didn't pay anything for the one I have.
What I'm asking is do you think it's worth it to spend 600+ dollars to get a new one?

Well, MHz dont really matter much in processors. What core is your current processor if it's 700MHz? I imagine it's a P3? The 1.4GHz Celeron is still gonna be faster, but it's still a Celeron.

I say you have to spend at LEAST $1000 on a laptop to get a half-decent all-around computer.

It's a PIII Coppermine (700MHz). So in your guys opinion, for basic computing I should keep the free one and save my 1000+ dollars.
If that is your opinion, do you have any ideas for me to do with the empty AGP Slot?
Thanks,
John

laptop graphics cards arent cheap, and are hard to know if they will fit unless you actually try it. if u dont need better gfx, leave it barren.

Well finding a GPU that will fit a laptop is going to be nearly impossible. Including the newer PCI-Express slots, you can't find one from 1 laptop and slap it into another. Reasons say it should, but physically it wont work. Everyone makes theirs different for every laptop. If someone comes to me and asks if a video card on a laptop can be replaced, I'd just say only with the one that it came with.

As for a new laptop, I always recommend a Centrino chipset or Pentium M. The extra battery life is always a plus- thats what you cant get from a Celeron.
