Is anything good in life free?

Are there any downsides to using linux as opposed to Windows?
Like will any of my software even work on it?
And can I install it on my C drive alongside my copy of Windows if I want to try it out?

If you use WINE Linux MIGHT be able to run SOME of your software. Now remember, I said MIGHT.

yeah... um, okay... enough about oxygen.
I should have put my first line in with the original thread title. I was talking about things at least somewhat anti-spyware related...

Wasn't the OP looking for Anti-Spyware???
and you guys are suggesting Anti-Virus....

He did also ask about Anti Virus within his second post to this thread. Please refer to here:

ah... well I was hoping for maybe some particular examples of free anti-virus or anti-spyware software that anyone has actually found to be useful...

Anyway, in my past experience AV wise Avast! was indeed the better of the few I tried. As for anti-spyware, you might want to also get ad-aware installed as that picks up some things that spybot doesn't, and vice versa.

Breaks.

Anyway, for Anti-Spyware you can use these:
AVG Anti-Spyware: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-spyware-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
Spyware Terminator: http://www.spywareterminator.com/dnl/landing.aspx
Ad-Aware: http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
Spybot Search&Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

EDIT: you can use more than one of these tools.

There you go. :)

Ah, bummer - I recently bought Spy Sweeper because of many good reviews it got. Plus, they were having a special deal on it. And now I see Spyware Terminator on your list. I hadn't heard of it and when I searched for free ones, I couldn't find any to my satisfaction. Oh well. Such is life. Now I have Spy Sweeper.

Anyway, I use and highly recommend these (the first two have already been mentioned in this thread:
Avast Antivirus
Spybot Search and Destroy
SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster takes no resources and blocks a lot of stuff. You should get it.
