Is it possible to Overclock my DELL

nope, you cant overclock a computer that was manufactured from a company like Dell, HP, compaq, sony, ect. That way if you go too high and fry it, you cant try and return it.

Yes you can, i have a hp that i overclocked by ~250Mhz
you might just have to flash the bios tho;)

interesting..... i cant see why dell would introduce overclocking features in a bios update.

Normally these boards just dont have overclocking options. Period.

Usually the companies like Dell, HP, Sony etc make their own BIOS ROM's to flash onto the boards as they leave their factory. All you need to do is go to the actuall board maker (ASUS, Abit, MSI, Intel) and get the origina OEM BIOS file, flash that onto it and youve got a clean "overclockable" PC.

After I flashed the bios on the hp , I could only mess with the FSB, so yea most OEM setups are not overclocking friendly...

also i messed with a compaq that had a "special" bios , no overclocking features in bios but you can use a program to up the FSB

and I messed with a new emachines that after a flash bios you could mess with the FSB but nothin else

Well my experience wernt so good, my current board at the moment is a asus p5gd1-fm, so i went to the asus website and downloaded the bios flash for the p5gd1 seeing as they didnt have a specific one for the p5gd1-fm, it didnt work tho, if anyone could help me in finding a flash update for my board it would save me havin to go out and but another one, i went to the fujitsu-siemens site that is who made my pc and they had a flash update it worked but it didnt unlock diddly squat. so my board is still not overclockable.

What rev did you flash your BIOS from and to?

Yeah they dont have one for the OEM because OEM systems are dealt with by the OEM companies

so my board is still not overclockable.
No surprise there

lol, ok so what if i buy another board, which im planning to do tomorrow, will my restore cd that came with my fujitsu-siemens comp work if i change the motherboard, as ive heard ill most probably have to do a complete reinstall of the OS if i change motherboards. If it doesnt does that mean ill have to go out and buy a copy of windows as well as the motherboard as thats gonna be a tad bit expensive, id rather know now before i buy the board, cheers

1. You'll most likely (enough to bet on) have to reinstall the OS (i.e, you need the CDs)
2. You'll also prolly need a new PSU since Dell PSUs are made for Dell-modified boards, there are some sggestions in PSU101 :)

Hey Preator

Just to clarify something my computer is not a Dell, im not the thread starter :), i have a fujitsu siemens i have already changed the psu to a better one 450w it is right now, anyway my problem is that i dont know if my restore cd that came with my fijitsu comp will still work if i change motherboards, as ive heard restore cds only work on the computer u got it with, so am i stuck if i change the motherboard, will i have to go out and buy another copy of windows? cheers and sorry for the confusion

Ah, fair enough :)

Ive encountered one or two cases where restore cds worked on machines they arent intended to work on (note that you cant install ... just restore) but for the most part they wont. Now if you have a copy of Windows then you shouldnt have to buy another one (just install on your new machine and activate it again) but if you dont have a copy of the standalone Windows installation CD, i would bet you'd need to buy it :)

I dont know if this changes anything but my current restore CD does infact allow you to install as i just the other day did a fresh install of windows on my second hard drive with the cd and it didnt even ask me to activate it,it seems to have all the files a full copy would have. its completely different to the restore floppy i got with my former pc which was a packard bell as i didnt have that option on that, again dont know if that changes anything :)

Interesting ... maybe you got lucky. In that case, Id suggest you get the system without Windows and buy it only if you need to.

Just hope that when i get my other motherboard and it asks me to activate windows, as it probably will if i change boards, itll take the license key that is printed on the front of my fujitsu case, even tho ive changed motherboards isnt my license still valid to use?

So long as its the only copy you have installed with that license key at any given moment.

this is only something that i heard, but when i had my dell i had the same problem, a guy i know told me about switching the MoBo's Jumpers to allow for O/C, i didnt try or look further as the week after i just bought a computer, does anybody know if it is possible?

Could I overclock my dell dimension 8200? I think the warenty is expired anyway. How do you overclock and what is this BIOS thing people talk about and how do I get to it?
