Old CPU, board and RAM and arguably a slightly under-powered PSU, otherwise fine.

You want an i7 6700K, a Z170 board and DDR4 RAM with a 600 or 650W PSU really.

Is this a pre-built system?

No, it isn't a pre-built system, I just took what was cheap but worth the price thinking it could run Arma 3 on ultra to medium.

Get that with the i7 6700K and DDR4 RAM and a Z170 board and maybe a Corsair CX600M and it's bang up to date and good.

I'd choose a Samsung SSD too. 850 Evo.

Like spirit said. Depending on how much more expensive the 6700k, z170 mobo and ddr4 memory, I would swap to the 6700k for sure if there is little cost difference.

1080p it will run arma 3 perfectly fine maxed out.

I thought you already got the other machine... I misread!

Definitely go with the Z170 Skylake setup in that case!!!

Skylake set was already recommended. Others:

- SSD is good. No reason to swap MLC (BX100) to TLC drive (850 Evo).
- For 60Hz display, consider cheaper video card. GTX980 is very expensive and not future proof. Also much better video cards are coming. So R9 380 4GB is my recommendation.
- PSU is much better than any Corsair CX.
- Operating system is OEM or Retail? OEM is not transferrable, Retail is. Price difference is minimal.

I disagree about the video card. Buy a 980 or a high-end card now and you shouldn't need to replace it for a while. Buy a cheaper card like the R9 380 now and a year or two down the road you might want to upgrade. And if you get a 980 or a faster card now then you don't need to worry so much about upgrading your monitor in the future like you would if you had a cheaper card.

You have the budget for the 980 or a 980 Ti, go for it.

Get the OEM OS too. The retail version is about $60 or so more expensive.

OEM Windows 10 Pro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...88491&cm_re=windows_10-_-32-588-491-_-Product ($140)

Retail Windows 10 Pro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...88529&cm_re=windows_10-_-32-588-529-_-Product ($200)

Quite a bit more expensive. Home is cheaper though, but the retail version of Home is still about $30 more expensive than the OEM version. I'd say save that $30. No need to spend that $30 or $60 if you don't need to.

Why not upgrade? 14/16nm cards are coming. GTX980 seems not so good for Directx 12 software. Also GTX980 is far from enough for 4K resolutions.

I got my 980 on xmas 15' deal @ Newegg

The 980Ti was out of my budget at the time..and the 980 was a better deal financially!

It's cheaper to buy a 980 now and stick with it than it is to buy an R9 380 now and then upgrade to something better. Or if you're that concerned about wanting the newest then wait for the new cards you say are coming.

As is the world of computer.. always something newer, faster, bigger, better..

I know my 980 will be overkill for a few years for me.. by which time HBM3 will be out and GDDR5XXXXX (exaggerating here)

Exactly. That's why I say if you want something computer-related, buy it now. If you can't afford it, save and buy what you really want. Or if you're prepared to wait for the 'next big thing' you can but realise that if always want the newest you might actually never get round to buying anything.

For 60Hz FullHD monitor, GTX980 offers very little over R9 380 4GB. So I still suggest getting very good video card now and when it's time for bigger one, swap video card also. GTX980 is not good enough for 4K anyway. I consider 500$ for 28nm GPU (that 28nm manufacturing tech is over 4 years old now) too expensive.
