We have cable internet, but it is well under the spec for g. Would getting an n router speed anything up, or improve the connection?

Getting an N router and wireless cards would speed up your local network speed through shares and what not, but not so much on the internet.

if you want to speed up your internet you will need to upgrade your internet package or change IPS's

As AdmnPower said, the only real advantage of upgrading from 802.11g to 802.11n would be if you are currently in a location where you get very little wireless coverage, since 802.11n does have a longer range. If you are getting 3-5 bars now then honestly there will be little to no difference if all you are using it for is the internet, now if you share files then I would say upgrading to 802.11n is worth it. Just remember every wireless device on the wireless network needs to be 802.11n compliant, otherwise everyone will be downgraded to the slower 802.11g specs.

to add on to what everyone else already said, your internet speed is mostly dependent on your ISP, not your router. no matter how fast the transfer rate on your router is, it will still be ISP limited, which depends on which speed you chose on initial setup

Wouldn't it be kinda funny to come across someone with 20meg fiber or something like that using 802.11b.
And on top of that they are 4 rooms and one story below the wireless AP, so their signal is between 1-2 bars, effectively giving them drastically reduced speed and increased latency.
