Just Finished Building New Computer... And It Won't Work

Hey,

I just finished installing a Q6600, Gigabyte P35-DS4 and 2 gb of DDR2 800 MHz Geil RAM in my system. I tried starting it up and it worked but without anything coming up on the monitor. I then realised I had forgotten to plug in the 4 pin ATX connector (not molex the square one) to the motherboard. Now that I have connected this the computer will begin to start but then turn off after about 5 seconds without anything coming up on screen at all. I think this may be because my power supply is unable to supply the power needed. it is a 550 Watt Antec True Power 2.0. I have no idea what to do.... PLEASE HELP!!!!

System Specs:

GPU: Gigabyte 7900 GTX
Hard Drive: Maxtor 200 GB SATA
CD Drive: DVD+R or something...

Before the Q6600, Geil 2gb and P35-DS4 I had a P4 3.2 GHz, 1.5gb DDR ram and a intel 915 series board.

the power supply should be fine. does the motherboard you have have any onboard video? if so take everything not necessary for the computer to turn on OFF. the hdd, the video card if possible, and leave only one stick of ram, then see if the computer posts if nothing happens i would check all your connections again.

WOW! it worked... but now what do I do. I disconnected the Hard Drive and the CD drive and left one stick of RAM and it turned on to the BIOS screen and then a black screen which said insert system disk.
 
now connect your hard drive (turn it off first i think lol)

if that works ok turn the computer off again and hook up the second stick of ram. this should be narrowing down the problem rather effectively
 
Okay I connected the hard drive and again it went to the BIOS screen then a black screen which again said "insert system disk and press enter". What now? heh.
 
now restart this. have only 1 stick of ram, the hard drive, and the dvd-rom and go into your bios and set the dvd-rom as the boot drive. when you turn the computer on stick in the windows cd you have
 
Okay... I didn't manage to get into Bios but I did however manage to get it to boot from the CD ROM (Somehow) so now I am at the Windows Setup screen. What now captain?
 
Wait up... I got into the blue Windows Setup screen and then it turned itself off after about 2 seconds : /.
 
lol now you install windows, and pray that the installation goes smoothly. once the installation is finished, you can turn off the computer again (this is why building is a pain lol) and plug in the video card make sure you connect the video cards power too. oh and remember to take the VGA cord from the onboard video to the video card.

EDIT: oh wait from what i can read you didnt unplug the video card, so if this starts up ok just turn off the computer, set your hard drive as the boot drive then start it up
 
My keyboard and mouse are also not lighting up during this period. They are both connected to the back of the computer so that is pretty odd. Is there a USB power connection I could be missing?

EDIT: My computer is shutting off during the setup process at different times.. not sure what this means but yeah.

the usb connections on the back should work automatically are they wireless? i would try a plain set of keyboard and mice, because i believe you must install wireless devices before you use them

shutting off is normal, on installation my windows vista copy restarted my computer at least five times, i just let it do its magic and obviously it worked, or i wouldnt be here! lol
 
No, they aren't wireless. Logitech G15 and G5. This is insane!! Still got the same problem restarting during the windows setup part.
 
Okay, I'll keep trying. Why is it that when I put in the second stick of RAM it won't budge. Will I never be able to connect it?
 
wont budge? what do you mean? the computer wont turn on when the second stick is in, or it just wont fit?
 
Haha, sorry bad wording. When I say won't budge I mean the computer won't start.

Anyway, more problems. I got all the way through windows setup and realised I hadn't plugged my HDD into the motherboard from the last time I disconnected it:rolleyes:. So I plugged it in. I managed to get the keyboard working and get into bios (it is still not lighting up though). I went into bios and changed the 1st boot device to CD ROM 2nd to Disabled and 3rd to Floppy. I then exited and started up. It gets to the "Press any key to boot from CD ROM" and I bash my keyboard. But nothing happens and it continues onto the "Windows did not start successfully, choose one of the following, Last Known Good Configuration... etc".

Is there something I am not doing right?

BTW thank you soooo much lovely. I can practically taste that Quad Core goodness... not there yet.
 
hmmm this is getting difficult then. we need to get the keyboard working, thats now the priority. is it a ps2 keyboard or usb, i dont know if you stated so or not. im thinking software issue, not hardware issue because you said that your keyboard works in bios (good sign, means we're getting somewhere, from a black screen lol)

oh and when you said that, do you mean that the computer will not turn on with the second stick? that may mean a bad stick, but lets save that for later i think
 
hey wait if it says windows did not start successfully does that not mean that it was installed? oh wait if you didnt have the hard drive in when you did it then i suggest re-trying to install it with the hd in lol.

EDIT: hey im going to eat for a few minutes ill be back in maybe 15-20 i suggest sitting down and taking a breather for a bit i know with computers sometimes that is dearly needed

Lol I had this hard drive before so yeah...

In other news! I managed to fix this bit myself heh. I went into the Bios peripherals thing and enabled keyboard and mouse support. So now I am running Windows Setup. I already had an installation of Windows on here as I did not change the Hard Drive from my computer.

Will I ever be able to install my second stick of RAM? What do I have to do before I can put it back in again?
 
i would suggest sticking it back in only after you have completely set your computer up. then take the first stick out and stick the second in its place to definitively know if its bad, or maybe a bad ram slot
