Lag in single player games.

Did'nt know where to put this, as the problem could be one of many topics.

I've been having some lag problems in two games (Single Player), Rainbow Six Vegas and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Both are first person shooters.

When I play on 800 - 600 resolution it works fine, anything higher gets that little bit of lag (frame rate I guess) that leads to a near automatic death if you ever need to aim quickly. Worse lag ensues if the game gets really active.

My specs are as follows. (Let me know if I'm missing any info that could help).

Windows XP
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 520 2.80GHz
Tech: 90 nm
Volt: 1.365
Core Speed: 2792 MHz
Bus Speed: 199.5 MHz
Rated FSB: 798 MHz
Chipset: Intel i915P/i915G
Max Bandwidth: PC3200 200MHz
RAM: 1.5 Gigs
Graphics Card: GeForce 7800 GT OC

Rainbow Six Vegas is said to require a 3.0 GHz Processor, but, as well as many others, I run it on 2.8 GHz. Of course, I am having problems with it, but Ghost Recon requires 2.8GHz and I'm having the same problems, so I dont think that has anything to do with it.

I have enough Hard Drive space.
I don't have a soundcard, just the on board that came with my comp.

My Monitor is a 19-inch Samsung SyncMaster 997 DF

I can't understand what could cause the lag so any help would be appreciated.

Yea, the pc3200 is my memory. I have two slots of 512 and one slot of 1 gig. Could you explain why that might be the problem?.

I run Norton Antivirus every once in a while. You think that's enough, or should I be running other antivirus programs?.

well, there could be few problems

1. your RAM speed might not be fast enough.
2. Norton Antivirus might be hogging your resources
3. your comp is clogged with spyware

suggestions:
try use other anti-virus software. AVG Anti-Virus is quite commonly used.
NOTE: Do not use more than one Anti-Virus software because they may clash and make your computer performance worse.

try spyware removal tools. e.g.:
- AVG Anti-Spyware,
- Spyware Terminator,
- Spybot Search & Destroy,
- AdAware SE
NOTE: it is ok to have more than one spyware removal tool. Infact, it is advisable since spyware that is detected by one program may not be detected by the other.

after running all the spyware removal tools, run either:
- CCleaner, or
- RegCleaner
to clean any spyware residue left behind in the registry.

try the above first before resorting to buying a new set of RAM.
if after all these are done and you are still experienceing lag, then i guess it is time to change that RAM of yours :D

I got rid of many spyware programs but it's still lagging.

I've been told it might be the way the game was made.

I can't see it being my ram because it's only on these Tom Clancy games that this happens.

I think your computer just isn't good. Your hardware specs, are, well....not ideal for gaming. Even the Graphics card isn't too good. your system all around might not have the power to go at hi res. Your getting at settings your computer cant handle and that's what causes LAG. Honestly, I can see that computer running games good at all. Might want an upgrade. or 2... or a few... I'm not trying to be mean. just saying my diagnosis of the problem.

It's possible that it's my computer, but like I said, It's only these Tom Clancy games that have lag.

my computer copes fine with all the latest games on medium settings at 1280 x 1024 resolution. Ghost recon though I get 10Fps very laggy the problem with that game is as well as the graphics being advanced they also require physics calculations it's a very processor and ram raping game. The physics calculatins in Ghost recon are so high for full settings you need a physics card to run it. It's one of the first games to be programed to make use of the new physics cards alot of other games makers are prefairing to have the next gen graphics cards run the next gen physics in the GPU. The other problems with the other game could be due to the makers not making a an optimised code you may have out of date drivers but these are Ai intensive games and so the graphics card is made to wait for your processor and ram to catch up.

If your motherboard had dual channel ram slots and you added matching ram sticks in each slot group your ram will be twice as fast dual channel allows both banks to be accesed at the same time making 400mhz ram provide 800Mhz performance.

You could add a Asus Agea phisics card to the pci slot their over £130 last time I looked and offloads all the physics calculations from your cpu to its own powerful processor freeing up your Pent 4 to do other game running tasks like AI calculations. Is it worth it for one game though?

From what I understand dual channel only adds about 10-15 percent performance increase than single

yes thats the one I'm supprised its still laggy with that. I don't expect dual memory performance to be like adding a second cpu but good to point it out so he dont spend on new motherboard just to add the same stuff to it for 15% smoother performance. if it is the ram. Try asking on the Ghost Recon forums see what otheres are saying about it running bad on certain hardware.

I've made a stupid mistake, it's the demo version of an AGEIA Processor that's installed.

So good chance that it's my computer then.
