Laptop Backache

Hi, Im a design student in Northern Ireland doing some research into laptop design. Laptops are more attractive as a desktop replacement but the don't have any of the ergonomics of a desktop unit - adjustable screen, angled keyboard etc. I find working on a laptops for long periods is uncomfortable.

I would like to put a few questions to the users of this forum (you guys know your stuff)....

1. In your opinion are laptops being used more as desktop replacements?

2. Do you find working on laptops for long periods of time uncomfortable?

3. What features you think a laptop should have to make working on them more comfortable (as crazy and conceptual as you like, a fantasy laptop)

This is part of my research, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'll post a picture of my finished project on this forum when I'm done. Thanks,

Gab

Yes however the places of bussiness I seen will have a good monitor besides the laptop. When they working in the office they will have the laptop connected to the monitor. When they not working in there office they still have the laptop screen they can use.

I cant stand using the built in mouse of the laptop. I also dont find using the laptop keyboard that great. If I was to use it as a desktop replacement I would have a external mouse and keyboard to use most likly. Even when I took it places I would proberly bring a external mini mouse.

I cant think of anything that doable for making it better to use as a desktop replacement. For that reason just make it as small as possiable with staying very powerful so it easier to carry around when am not using it at home.

Yes, definately, i know more people with laptops than desktops

2. Do you find working on laptops for long periods of time uncomfortable?
No, i am on mine for at least 4 hours a day, and find the only annoying thing is the slight smallness of the screen

I would like longer battery life, bigger screen, a keyboard with all the keys (number pad) higher specs for the money, thinner, and finally more integrated features
Whoa, i don't half want a lot:D

Me, i dont think that they are.. as assuming the "whole world".. i think desktops are still essential and what most people still use because of the mere fact that desktops are cheaper than laptops. However, i personally prefer a laptop as my desktop replacement because it is a desktop pc with monitor, keyboard, and mouse all rolled up in a little package. so it saves me more space.

2. Do you find working on laptops for long periods of time uncomfortable?
I dont find it uncomfortable at all. i guess that will depend on how you mount your laptop. i usually have it on flat surfaces with a chair. i dont lay down or sit on the ground or what not.. so i find it more comfortable.

3. What features you think a laptop should have to make working on them more comfortable (as crazy and conceptual as you like, a fantasy laptop)
wow, i feauture i would like ot make them more confortable would maybe be hm... actually there really isn't.. the thing i would ask for is probably longer life spans for the screen and longer battery life

1. my laptop is the only computer i have. i love it and dont really want a desktop except maybe for gaming. laptops are getting more powerful everyday and the one i have is better than a lot of desktops i have used.

2. when i work on my lappy, i dont get uncomfortable at all. one issue is that it can get really hot on my lap. i read somewhere that men who use laptops a lot on their lap have lower sperm counts than those who dont. :o

3. i definitely think a more powerful gpu should be part of a good destop replacement notebook. also longer battery life, bigger hard drives (at least 200gb), and cooler opperating.

definately.

2. Do you find working on laptops for long periods of time uncomfortable?
depends. if the laptop is on my lap then yes. but if its on my desk and i have a nice comfy chair then no.

a cup holder and a button that tells your wife to go away.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for your replies, there all going into my research folder. I think I'll aim my design at secondary school kids. Apple are realy trying to introduce ibooks into high scools in the States as a replacement for actual books. It's the future of education seemingly. I'll try to go for the ergonomic, posture and eyesight friendly route. Again if you have any thoughts on the subject let me know,

thanks again

1. my laptop is also the only computer i have and i am very happy with mine, i think they are being used more as desktop replacements because they have the potential to become almost as good in a much more confined space.

2. i have no problem working for long periods, u can get them with up to 17"screens. mines 15.4 W and i think thats big enough.

3. battery life, more easily upgradeable, cheaper (wishful thinking)
