Laptop died on me Gateway (M-6823) Long read

Few a few weeks my computer has been running slow and the internet browser would freeze as soon as I logged on. I have Norton antivirus. Then a couple of days ago I sooned as i turned my laptop on it would freeze. So im thinking it must be the hard drive. So since I have a Recovery Disk that i got when i bought my computer I thought ill just erase hard drive and start fresh. I found this website white canyon which as software the will erase my hard drive for me. i install it then after about 15 minutes of running it it was at 23% then the screen went blue like my laptop just froze. Now when I boot up I get No OS found on my computer I put my recovery disk in but it does nothing. Could I just buy a new hard drive then use the recovery disk to get back on track or will I need something else. Im running Vista
 
Press F10 a couple times while the gateway screen shows after you press the power button. Choose cd/dvd drive from the list with the recovery disc in the drive. Then follow the recovery disc options.
 
I press F-10 this is what i get

1. IDE CD: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7563A
2. Sata HDD WDC
7. Boot to LAN: Realtek boot agent

I have tried all three and I get this message for all 3

Media Test Failure
Exiting PXE ROM
Operating system not found

Still no luck
 
The top one is the one you want. If it doesn't work with the recovery disc in it your recovery disc doesn't work, or it's not actually a recovery disc (since most computers don't come with those anymore). If you find a copy of Vista (off a friend or something), borrow it and do the same thing.
 
Before my laptop went down I put this disk in and it had drivers and apps. on it. I got it a year ago when i bought laptop at Best Buy. None of my friends have vista or thier laptop came with out a disk. Could I load XP I have XP on my desktop which is also a gateway just older i have all discs that came with it.
 
What does it say on the discs? Is there a OS disc and a seperate Driver disc? If the OS disc is seperate from the driver disc than yes, it would work, but you would also have to find all the drivers for your laptop, which could prove to be difficult like other newish laptops loaded with Vista. Do you have a spare computer to use (I'm assuming you do since you can post here) with a DVD burner?
 
Yes I have all the disks that came with my desktop including the OS disk seperate and I have 5 other disks My Laptop is a Gateway I also have a desktop also a gateway I have the OS XP when I load that disk in my Laptop it starts to run I get to the Set-up Screen press enter, I get the Licensing agreement I accept, then I get a sceen that shows existing partitions on this computer press C to create press D to delete then on the bottom it says Uknown disk- there is no disk in this drive. I press enter than I get a blue screen that say A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down etc.
 
Alright, to get a working laptop you can put the gateway XP on it, since it's just an OS disc. You'll have to delete your partitions. how many partitions are there?
 
First I inserted the drivers CD it did a few things Then I put OS XP in drive it began loading files. I have no partitions it shows Unknown disk (there is no disk in drive) I go up and down and nothing when I press enter i get that blue screen about system error and thats it

Just a quick side note here. That OS license from the other computer may not activate on the laptop since it is an OEM version and thus tied to the other computer.

You will have to reformat your drive with the XP install utility. Where it says "Unknown Disk" you will have to create a partition an let Setup format it. Is it giving you the error at this point?
 
I hit C for create and nothing happens. Maybe your right i cant activate XP on my laptop sinces its on my desktop. Can I just go buy a new OS and install or do you think my hard drive is bad. If i buy another OS does it matter which one XP or vista

You could get Vista if you want to. If you are satisfied with XP you can continue to use that just fine. You won't have to purchase a new license just to upgrade/swap out the hard drive. Also, if you are thinking about getting Vista, check for proper drivers for your computer first.

My laptop had Vista first I have a recovery disk but only has drivers and apps. My desktop has XP but I have all the disks for xp including the OS disk and drivers disk. Which one should I use. Can I use xp on my laptop since I have all the disks and even though it is on my desktop. Thanks

You don't have an OS recovery disk for your laptop? I thought you said you did several posts up. Well, if you don't, your only OS recovery option is on the restore partition of the hard drive...which you can't use now anyway. You will have to contact the manufacturer to have them send you a disk. What were you using to try to restore with just a moment ago?

You can use XP in your laptop, but you will not be able to transfer the OEM license your desktop. You would have to purchase a new XP license.
 
yea i do have a recovery disk that was made by best buy it says Recovery Disk Apps & Drivers. does that also include the OS on that disk it doesnt say it on the disk. If this includes Vista on this disk all I need is a new hard drive right.

If you can boot from it into Windows Setup, then yes. Yes, if it is Vista setup disk and the license sticker on the bottom of the laptop is a Vista license, then give the new drive a shot.

Pull the old one out and experiment with it after you get your system back up. :)
 
Theres no OS on that disc. I wouldn't recommend XP since your XP driver disc won't work on your laptop. If you can't get ahold of a Vista disc I guess you could buy a copy. But yes, sounds like that program made your hard drive kaput. If getting one is no problem then throw a new one in there with a clean install of the new Vista. After thats done pop the driver disc in there, install whatever drivers are needed and you'll have a nice clean install.
