Laptop is Slow

Can someone please take a look and my HJT logfile. My laptop is very slow. I did a antivirus scan and no results were found. I also ran malwarebytes and no results were found. Did a disk cleanup and removed all unneccessary programs and toolbars. That helped a bit but still very slow.

How is it slow? Can you give me an example?

takes a while to start up, opening programs, opening IE, etc.

Thanks.

PS: I did remove JAVA and numerous unnecessary programs and disabled all toolbars and that has helped. I have ordered additional RAM memory. currently has 512 and upgrading to 2GB. Feel free to ask any additional questions.

Lets see if you have any other unnecessary programs. I need you to post a special log from hijackthis. Open hijackthis, click on open misc tools section, click on open uninstall manager, click on save list and save it. Then copy and paste the contents back here.

Also do the following.

Please download and run TDSSkiller

When the program opens, click on the start scan button.

TDSSKiller will now scan your computer for the TDSS infection. When the scan has finished it will display a result screen stating whether or not the infection was found on your computer. If it was found it will display a screen similar to the one below.

infection-found.jpg

To remove the infection simply click on the Continue button and TDSSKiller will attempt to clean the infection.

When it has finished cleaning the infection you will see a report stating whether or not it was successful as shown below.

scan-completed.jpg

If the log says will be cured after reboot, please reboot the system by pressing the reboot now button.

After running there will be a log that will be located at the root of your c:\ drive labeled tdsskiller with a series of numbers after it. Please open the log and copy and paste it back here.

TheTDSSkiller found No infections. Below is the HJT Uninstall list.

After turning on my laptop I timed the time it took for the laptop to load up and show my desktop. It took 8 to 9 minutes. Shutdown takes quite a while also.

Can I uninstall all those "HP Programs"? there are numerous and I think they are slowing the system down.

I just ordered 2GB of Ram Memory. I do have the Windows XP Software from my last PC that was fried. Do you really think I'd be better off with XP? I don't do much but surf the web and use MS Office Software.

How would I go about installing the XP OS? Do I just insert the CD? Any tips on how to do it would be appreciated.

This is complete bull defecation.

1. that will not work. You will need a OEM or Retail disk with the correct key
2. No. You have a superior OS as is. Upgrade your RAM and check with TDS killer like John suggested and you will be fine.

Unfortunately Vista doesn't run very well on some machines even with enough memory installed. I work on computers constantly, I have my own repair business.

My recommendation would be to wait until you get more memory installed and see what happens. However, it still shouldn't take 8-9 minutes to load everything. It's possible you have a software issue. Try uninstalling AVG and see if the machine is faster. Make sure you download and run the avg removal tool.

If i remove AVG, what antivirus do you recommend I install? Thanks for the reply.

You can try either Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials, both are free. But don't load any antivirus until you see what uninstalling AVG does for the system. When was the last time vista was freshly installed on it?

I believe the vista is the original install. Though I am not sure if we have the recovery disks.

Thanks

I would definately do a fresh install of Vista if you can find the recovery cd's. What is the exact model number of laptop you have? It would be in your best interest to max out the ram on it so it runs better.

Hey john35,

The laptop is a compaq pavilion dv6305us. I asked my daughter for the cd's but she says she can't seem to find them. Thanks for the reply.

Wow, the max ram for that machine is only 2gb. They should have never put vista on that. I would say find a copy of XP and install it but that may be more trouble then whats its worth. HP doesn't list any xp drivers and it may be a hassle getting it installed. Looks like you will have to max out the memory and call it a day. See if there is a recovery partition on the laptop, you may be able to reinstall windows that way.

john,

there is a drive name HP_Recovery (D:). Is that the recovery partition you were refering to?

Thanks

I believe on HP's you restart the system and press the F10 key to access the recovery partition and it should start the process.
