Guys,

I have built a low spec machine with the bellow components. I know what you are all going to say, 'Why did you buy low spec compenents? Because i wanted to know how to build a basic computer regardless whether it was i5 or pentium 4..... and so on'. I have physically connected everything in place, when i turn my pc on i see the motherboard screen display then it goes into a black screen indicating that i need to modify the bios settings and time/date ect.. From the point of turning it on and seeing this screen, it totally shutdown within 10 seconds. I hear no beeps or see any specific error codes. Based on the components i have purchased, can somebody tell me what would be the likely reason for this please? My first initial thought is that the quality of products is somewhat low however, i also considered that could this be that the RAM is not of a good quality make? What i don't want to do throw away all my compenents since i want this working, which is why i am suspecting it could be a RAM issue.

Since you have the push pins for the cpu cooler, make sure they are snug down and the heatsink doesn't move around on the cpu. Sounds like its overheating to me. Did you use the brass standoffs between the case and motherboard?

Hi, i have resisted my heatsink fan, but this time when i power the machine on, i receive an error saying ' Erreur MBR enter boot device' which will then result in my machine powering down like before and my DVD drive does not open when i press the button. Any suggestions?

There is thermal past on both the cpu and heatsink. The powersupply came with my case, it's a ATX-500 500W power supply. Your suspecting it may be faulty? Also, my dvd-rw is IDE however, when i press the button to open the flap, nothing comes out. I've plugged the power cable into the drive and the ide cable from it to the motherboard, any other connectors i need for it to work?

id also blame no name psu for the issue here, most 'included' units with machines are not worth using, their worth using as a door stop. look for a 400W unit in the 30-40 dollar range.

When you turn the computer on does the drive light on the cdrom drive turn on briefly? If not, the drive is either dead or you have a problem with a power connector going to the drive, or a psu issue.

No drive light appears when powering the machine, what about the power supply i listed would that be better to use? Could having a faulty psu also give reason as to why i have the MBR error?

Yes, the corsair is a good unit. A bad power supply can cause the hdd to have issues. Your hard drive may already be failing and need to be be replaced. What brand of hard drive do you have?

Like I said, either the power connector from the power supply that is connected to the cdrom drive is bad or you just have a very bad psu.

The HD i have is a used/refurbished item, do you think i should keep it as is and purchase a new PSU or replace both and also buy a new HD? The reason i ask is because of the error i received so i'm just simply deciding if i buy a new HD something like 60gb i probably won't run the risk of having that some problem especially with a new PSU, hope that's clear.

If you can attach the hard drive to another system then I would download and make a seatools bootable cd and run the extended test on the drive to check for errors.

http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/#

Click on the download tab on that page and download the seatools for dos iso file. You will then need to use burning software to write the iso image to a cd. Then boot to it.

Ok, the only other system i have is the laptop that i'm typing from and the one i'm building unfortunately. What i will do is purchase the new power supply, download and burn the software on my laptop, hopefully the DVD-burner will work with the new PSU insert the CD and run it. If it detects errors, will it also repair boot files? If so, i have Win 7 Ult Edition 64-bit can i install that after running the seatools software?

What abuot my DVD-RW drive, do i need to set master/slave settings also on my HD?I'm going to purchase a new PSU but what about the fact that my dvd-rw does not open and the error i receive, would purchasing a new PSU help in this matter or is there something i'm missing?

Is your Hard Drive and DVD drive both IDE. If so and they are both on the same cable, you need to set the HD to master and the DVD to slave. If they are on different IDE cables, set both to Master. If the Hard Drive is a SATA there is no master or Slave with SATA, just set the IDE DVD to master.

If the DVD drive is not opening with no power, try another Molex power connector. But in any case if the DVD drive works or not you need another quality power supply like has been said.

There is thermal past on both the cpu and heatsink.
Not saying it's the reason it won't boot, but if after you removed the hsf - you didn't clean the cpu and hs then reapply paste to the cpu before remounting the hs, then you need to do so.

The HD is SATA and DVD drive is IDE, i'll purchase a new power supply and burn the boot disk and run the software. Thanks for the assist so far, i will keep you posted. Feel free to add more suggestions.

Thanks
