Mac Guru's, I need some help

My friend gave me her macbook pro (core 2 duo, 8600gt era) to look at because she thought it had a virus.

Pretty much after looking at it, I saw that she had downloaded and then removed protectmac antivirus, which I looked up and it seemed to check out anyways.

After about 45 minutes of farting around looking at stuff on the internet, the screen went insane, covering everything in artifacts, and locking up the system. I held the power button to turn off and turn back on. First boot it kernel panicked and I had to do it again. Second boot it fired up, and I haven't been able to make it do it since. It's been a couple hours.

Senses point to hardware, but I really don't want it to be that. Wanted to run it by anyone who knows their way around macs better than me before I bear the news.

The first one seems like a kernel panic as well. Or something I have had before. But it only happened once to me. So I'm not super sure.

It seems to keep happening. I got out of the shower and while the screen wasn't full of artifacts (could have been the screensavers almost black screen), it was frozen again. Any ideas?

I would check console.app and see if there is anything telling in there at the time it happened.

Ok, I'm using the app and I don't think there is anything pertaining to the crash. I'm assuming I'm looking under 'system.log', since console.log is only stuff from today. Under that I can go to the last line from yesterday and it's something to do with the screensaver it was running..so I dont think there's anything pertaining to the crash.. Thanks though.

Edit: Ok, I've had another crash, here are some interesting logs:

Does that help any?

I also took a picture of the last crash. In this crash the jumbled mess was moving, sometimes it sits still. It looks different every time.

That's what I thought at first, but it doesn't seem to be based on heat, it can crash shortly after booting for the first time of the day and doing nothing intensive, or after displaying a bunch of 3d for like an hour, seems pretty random. I do think it might be a hardware issue though, with the graphics chip most likely.

After seeing that picture, I now have to say, that's not the error I've had. Based on the looks and the log, I would say there is a problem with the graphics. Maybe wearing out, I don't know.

That is most definitely a hardware issue. The errors in the console are kicking out video memory errors.
